Oscars

So, anybody watch? Every year, I am glued, because I am a sucker and I can't help it. It's a big "cool kid" popularity contest, but there are just far too may snarking possibilities.

For instance, Russell Crowe losing. I used to like him. A lot. But he turned into such an insufferable Robert Mitchum wannabe that I just found him less and less talented and attractive.

Did anyone see J. Lo's hair? Jeez.

I really thought LOTR was a shoo-in for best picture. But they just had to go with the safe, predictable choice. Just like with best director.

I can say now I won't watch next year. But I will.

A&E was airing four episodes of Law and Order to compete with the Oscars, and since I'm not big on watching movies, I figure I may as well give into my L&O jones. Heck, I go to video stores to rent DVDs of cable TV shows instead of movies. I did like hearing about Halle and Denzel, but I don't think I'll care about the Oscars untill Garrett Wang or B.D. Wong are up on that podium.

Well, jeez, if I had known there was an L&O marathon on...

Which ones did they run?

I dunno. It seemed like the "Oscar Reparations Edition." Whoopi as host. Sidney Poitier with "Lifetime Achievement." Denzel Washington (yay!) and Halle Berry (WTF?) picked as best thespians from among their respective genders. The Academy seemed like it was bending over so far backwards to highlight black people in the industry, it was almost insulting.

Count me among the folks who found Berry's speech to be ludicrous. You'd think she'd landed on the moon. I'm sorry, but when the race of a winner is irrelevant, that will be progress.

(And "A Beautiful Mind"? Feh. At least "Lord of the Rings" has two more chances!)

Didn't watch . . . and I'm glad. Four and a half hours is too much. Only saw part of Halle Berry's speech and that was also too much. It's about time that Sidney Poitier was recognized but Halle Berry?

It sure looked like Russell Crowe was blackballed because of his antics over in London last month. Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, and Best Movie went to "A Beautiful Mind". Crowe, who was supposed to be a sure thing wasn't. Hmmm....

P.S. Ryan, great site.

If Halle Berry is an Oscar award-winning actress, why did she suck so much in X-Men? A&E aired the episode where the comedy club owner gets away with murdering one wife, only to get snagged a season later killing another wife. I don't remember what the other two were about, but they were along the same lines. Theme night, I guess -- when divorce is just not enough.
