We're on TV!

Cast and crew from the long-running NBC hit E.R. are in town this week to film footage for Anthony Edwards' final episode on the show. Since I am easily starstruck...

...I was contemplating stalking the crew in the hopes of spotting Edwards. :) I alway enjoy hearing about/reading/seeing Hollywood productions in our little state. This also got me thinking: are there any Hawai'i-based television shows or movies that stuck out as good/excellent/bad/lame/hilariously inaccurate for you?

I grew up in the '80s, so it wasn't Hawai'i Five-O for me, it was Magnum P.I. all the way. Only, I've never noticed the inaccuracies until I recently started watching the reruns on A&E. One scene had him driving that Ferrari in Waikiki and then in the very next shot, he ended up in Kailua. I want to know that shortcut!

Vivi-dahlin', if you're going to stalk out Anthony Edwards, I'm joining you! *grin* I've always loved his character, and I kinda thought he was a bit of a charmer himself (watch him in Top Gun and you'll know why - GOOSE!). I'm also a fan of his wife - makeup artist Jeanine Lobell, who created Stila Cosmetics. (They're sold at Sephora, in the cute cardboard containers with Courier lettering - I used to be a makeup addict, that's why.) Maybe I can get Tony and Jeannie to sign my Stila 8-pan palette?

Anyway... I do remember - or, to be quite honest, I'm trying to forget - "Byrds of Paradise," the one with Timothy Busfield and a pre-PO5 Jennifer Love Hewitt (at her whiniest). That one, if I can recall, once featured a cameo by Robert Kekaula as, well, a "local" - tank top, shorts, flip flops.

A little better, though just as short-lived and cheesy, was "One West Waikiki" - basically Magnum PI with Cheryl Ladd instead of Tom Selleck. Speaking of Cheryl Ladd, I also saw her in a HI-themed episode of "Charlie's Angels" that I believe was shot on either Maui or Kona - lots of lush, rainforest vegetation, and the script specifically said that they were in Hawaii investigating a plantation. Unfortunately, that was also one of the more badly-acted episodes of "Charlie's Angels" - not to mention that everyone in that ep wore way too much aloha wear - and I was watching it during an overnight layover in Taipei, in the midddle of jet lag and a massive hangover. Eh.

I also remember a music video by Mary J. Blige which was shot in Kauai - gorgeous cinematography, and, dammit, those guys who got to paddle in the shots with her in the canoe were HOT!

Here's a question for everybody: How many of you ever watched any of the "Jurassic Park" movies in the theater only to have your moviegoing interrupted by mokes yelling at the screen saying, "Eh! I know dat place!"? It has happened to me, actually (Jurassic Park 2: "Eh! Das' Molokai! I know dey go wen' shoot theah!") - and not to mention my sister and her husband, who went hiking in the SAME EXACT LOCATIONS on Molokai right after watching Jurassic Park 1 in the theaters the night before.

Speaking of filiming in Hawaii, has anyone seen Sheryl Crow's new video? I forget the name of the song, but some of the scenes look like it was filmed in Hawaii. I could be wrong because I was flipping through the channels, with the remote, and warp speed. By the time I realized it and turned back to VH1, the video was over.

Krayon: It's "Soak Up The Sun." I think that some parts of it was filmed in Hawaii, with real pro surfers. I read an interview somewhere that Sheryl did the video b/c she was also learning how to surf around that time as well.

Does anyone remember the show that was filmed mostly in the International Market Place? It was some kind of action/drama where this guuy was searching for something about his family. I can't recall the name but I know I really hated it.

Tom, I don't know which show you're talking about, but... dang, that show sounds pretty effing lame.

Speaking of effing lame... BAYWATCH HAWAII. There used to be a time when Fox-2 would only show one episode - the one with the wedding - over... and over... and over again. Lame-o-la. And the less said about Stacy Kamano, the better.

A more pleasant thought: REAL WORLD HAWAII - the episode where Colin and his boys rent mopeds and end up getting busted while riding them through the UH Manoa campus, right by Dean Hall. Hilarious. And I still remember the trek my friends did to the RealWorld house, out by Diamond Head Beach, when the season finally ended and we found out it was on sale.

Hey, now.. give Stacy a break. Just being on TV, let alone a speaking role, is quite an accomplishment for my fellow Polacks (although she doesnt like to admit that she is one).

'Kay, Tom, I'll lay off on Stacy - I'm sure she's a nice gal... ;) I was going to say a lot about the quality of acting for the overall cast, but, c'mon, who am I kidding? It's BAYWATCH, for crying out loud!

There was a time when Baywatch was the most watched US television program in the world; when I read that I sank into a depression for two days. :)

"There was a time when Baywatch was the most watched US television program in the world; when I read that I sank into a depression for two days. :)"

ROTFLMAO! You could imagine how I felt when I read that, especially after finding out that Rupert Murdoch's StarTV was beaming the stuff out to otherwise conservative Islamic states through the wonders of satellite television. (Insert joke here.) I mean, really. It's a toss-up between Baywatch and MacGyver most days. ;)

Back to the subject at hand: Apart from The Brady Bunch, Charlie's Angels, and Love Boat (which I actually liked when I was, oh, 3) are there any other TV series, pre-ER, that have already done Very Special Episodes here in Hawaii?

I thought NBC already aired Anthony Edwards' final episode. The network certainly promoted this past week's episode as such. I don't watch "ER", although I have to say Anthony Edwards is one of those men I find oddly cute.

NBC made a huge, huge booboo with that one - it was Greene's last day in the ER (as in, "the emergency room"), but not Anthony Edwards' last day in ER (as in, The Series). Which means that between now and May 9's "aloha" episode, we're just going to watch Greene tie up his loose ends without seeing him at work in the ER. That is, if he can help it - there's a line in the final scene last Thursday hinting that Weaver might actually want him back for another few shifts.

Though I've never really managed to sit through an entire episode of ER in a long while (and the only thing I now watch on Thursdays is CSI) I loved last Thursday's ep - Greene was just full of biting comebacks and sarcasm all throughout. (To a lady whining about her ingrown toenail: "I have an inoperable brain tumor. I win.") Even his kiss-off to Weaver was just nasty; he just basically told her, in no uncertain terms, to get a f-ing life.

NBC made a similar booboo with Eriq LaSalle this season, too, when they made it look like it was going to be Benton's "last day/last episode" when in fact they still held him over for another few months due to contract negotiations. Pppffhh.

Do game shows count? The Wheel of Misfortune with Mistress Vanna comes here often. (I shouldn't make fun of Joe Moore's buddies--my mother made us watch it every night so I'm just rebelling.) Several of the talk shows have also filmed here.

What was that really old show that starred Brian Keith as a doctor - - was it something like the "Little People" or something like that? It was a long, long time ago. I think early 70's or maybe even late 60's.

Aiyah, I just remembered Wheel! Of! Fortune! They do come here so often, don't they? (And didn't they time one of those trips with Pat Sajak and Joe Moore doing "The Odd Couple" onstage here in HNL?)

Here's a thought that just crossed my mind: "The Weakest Link: Live from Hawaii!"

I remember that "Full House" had a Hawaii episode. Joey fell for some Hawaiian girl who only wore a bikini top and a hula skirt the entire time. And all the while, the sweet little Tanner girls ran screaming from the dreadful Menehunes. But of course, the episode ended happily with a luau.

Gag me with a spoon...

I love watching ER, and it's sad that Edwards will finally be leaving the show. He's one of the only original cast members left...

Movies that were filmed (or partially filmed on Oahu): I think some of the "jungle" scenes in "George of the Jungle" were filmed at Kualoa Ranch, as well as scenes from Jurassic Park. I loved George of the Jungle, btw. :)

I DARE anyone to HATE Waterworld more than me. I don't care if they filmed it in Kawaihae. The local media really hyped the filming of this movie and it turned out to be a big dissapointment.

About ER: Like I've said on Vivi's site, now that Greene and Benton are gone, apparently the only ones left from the original cast are Carter and Susan (who, as you know, left the show and was never allowed by contract to appear on another show for five years). Ppffh. Not that all of the other characters are chopped liver, though; I've always loved Luka and Abby (though not together), and the Mekhi Phifer character (aka Peter Benton v2.0) looks promising.

Loved George of the Jungle! Mighty Joe Young was shot here, too, but I didn't really like it as much.

Aiyah, WATERWORLD! Between that, Pearl Harbor, and Baywatch, I don't know which one did the most damage to the economy and the state of filmmaking in Hawaii. Is it true that the production used the entire state's supply of steel just for the ridiculously ugly sets?

(ps. Tom, this is going to disturb you, but there are actual people who liked Waterworld and are now redeeming its reputation on video. I still think it's a freaking butt-ugly movie, though.)

We have that new movie coming out with Nicolas Cage, Windtalkers. It looks interesting, but sadly also a flop. :(

Posted by Ryan on April 10, 2002 10:31 PM:

Don't forget "Lilo & Stitch" - I expect that to take over the papers and talk shows here when it comes out...

I didn't mind "Waterworld." It wasn't great, but I honestly don't think it sucked that badly. Not compared to "Battlefield Earth" or "Eye of the Beholder," anyway.

And Krayon's post got me curious about that Sheryl Crow video, and indeed, it was shot on the North Shore. Note that Crow says in this chat transcript that the North Shore is where all the surfers used to go. I wonder where they go now?

Just wanted to add that the E.R. Hawai'i episode airs this week Thursday (May 9). NBC has been advertising this ep heavily as Mark's "goodbye."

This guy in running for the U.S. Senate...and he used to be on "Full House" and apparently now lives on Maui.

Interesting stuff. Check it out:
