Make My 'Golden Eye' Red

Halle Berry — now an "Oscar-winning actress" — plays a Bond girl named Jinx... and she very well may be just that.

The 20th installment in the James Bond movie franchise, "Die Another Day," is filmed in part in Hawaii. (For just a surf scene, I suspect, as other locales include Havana and Hong Kong.) In February, Pierce Brosnan injured his knee. And now during shooting in Spain, Berry got something in her eye.

I certainly hope no one suggests it's the Hawaiian connection that's bringing the bad luck. As I've happily learned through a number of the threads here, Hawaii's "film industry" (though still too small to warrant the removal of the cynical quote marks) still has a pulse. But, our reputation is still pretty shaky, and has been ever since that teeny little murder thing in 1994.

Next up, Bruce Willis. Let's try to minimize the number of stunts he does himself...

If there's anything that gets my dander up any worse than the talk of the Hawaii music industry, it's the talk of a Hawaii film industry.

Speaking both as someone who all but got hired to do public relations for Surf Girls (God bless Jim Dooley) and as someone who spent her last semester listening to Evan Dobelle's grand plans for a UH Film School, I don't know if we'll ever be taken seriously enough as a place with a viable film industry.

I'm always going to have mixed feelings about this whole film-industry thing. I've already had not one but TWO potential screenplays rejected by teachers and peers because I don't use enough Pidgin and I don't have scenes where my characters 1) surf, 2) play ukulele, or 3) get in trouble with mokes from Waianae. (Then again, I can't help it if my scripts all sound like I ripped them off from Owen Wilson's scrap pile.)

Jinx or no, I'm still waiting for that creative breakthrough to send our industry over the edge.
