We're In The Paper!

Okay, so the online edition doesn't have it yet, but if you pick up this week's edition of Honolulu Weekly, the front-page story is about the blogging community - and if you read closely, there's a short article by a certain Ryan Kawailani Ozawa mentioning both IsleTies and this "talkstory" site. Pretty nifty, eh?

(If only Ryan wasn't still en route to Kuala Lumpur, because he definitely would've enjoyed seeing this...)

Oh, and another thing, since I can't help it: Today's my birthday, and in a strange way this article is a "gift" of sorts - what better way to start the day off than to see HawaiiStories in the paper? ;)

It's a Lei Day baby! Happy BD! And would you say you're a true Taurus? Not that I believe in that stuff much...but I'm such an Aries!

I'm on the search for a Honolulu Weekly. Thanks for the info.

Happy Birthday!

Speaking of media, everyone should find a copy of the May edition of Honolulu magazine. The cover story is King Street, all six miles of it. It's very good. Then Heckathorn writes about twenty eateries along the route. Since I spent 12+ years working within three blocks of the road, I've walked past a lot of these places, and eaten in a fair number.

Ooh....Food Choices! Can't wait for my copy to arrive:)

My co-workers and I have eaten our shares from King Street as well. I highly recommend Pai Thai for their curry, which is located across the street from Mediterraneo (another recommended eatery).

I know I'm a bit late in the day but Happy Birthday! I'm off to find a copy of the Weekly (easy enough at UH) and Hoolulu Magazine...

Just FYI, the Weekly story is now posted on their website. Click the link Stella provided above. :)

Happy birthday!! Hope it was a good one! :)

Ok, being that I don't actually have the weekly to peruse, someone needs to explain to me what the print version looks like - is it just like the linked page that is displayed on the site, with the http's spelled out?

Or am I missing something.

To everyone else who has posted as of tonight (05/01/2002, 10:30 PM), thank you for all the birthday wishes! I ended up not going to Buca's as planned (couldn't find more than four people to be in the same place at the same time - bummahz!) but I did get to spend lots of nice meals and good times with family and friends anyway. So it all worked out great. :)

I was just at the Weekly site, and I noticed their links to Ali, Vivi ("twentysomething blogging"), and Cheyne - not to mention Terri, Panther, Champuru and Ian Lind. (What? No Dangerous Days? Wait, I take that back...)

The print article, on the other hand, is a little more detailed - the list of blogs isn't published, but Joe Edmon's essay is mostly about the impact of blogs on public discourse in general (citing the weblog of political journalist Andrew Sullivan as one of the references. Ryan's piece is more about the Hawaii blog community in general - in fact, in the print version Ryan mentions Jon Asato's Talk Stink! (a guy who "takes on the world but manages to avoid talking stink most of the time"), which, surprisingly, is not linked up from the Weekly site.

(Another complaint about this article: What, no Wil "Wesley Crusher" Wheaton??)

Now I really really REALLY want to get this month's Honolulu Magazine! My sister was just telling me about this and she didn't realize that there was a Golden Coin on North King before she read that article. Mmmmm, Manila food...

Again, my thanks. :)

Oh, I get it. I have to wait until next week before the story appears there.

Posted by julia on May 1, 2002 10:49 PM:

And thanks stella - it looks like I hit post when you had finished typing your msg.

And happy birthday!

Whee! What was printed was probably a third of what I was ready to submit, and sadly, I couldn't link everyone I know and love. Of course, the HawaiiStories plug should help folks find most of 'em!

Agreeing to write that article -- four days before leaving for Kuala Lumpur, when I was already working 14 hours a day -- definitely falls in the "What was I thinking?" category. But I couldn't resist the chance to plug island writers, and get in my personal pet peeve about "blogs vs. journals" (and how personal storytelling on the web didn't start with Blogger.Com).

Someone save me a copy!

I was dumbfounded that the article appeard and made the front page -- but excited none-the-less!

That whole Honolulu Weekly webpage links thing was weird too. You'd think that they'd put up links to Wil Wheaton or other genuinely interesting sites. Go figure.

But we're in like flynn now! Woohoo!

Posted by bunny on May 2, 2002 11:50 AM:

I saw a link to good ol' Wil's page on that list. I swear.

Posted by bunny on May 2, 2002 11:54 AM:

Or am I missing the joke (I know people joke about Wil all the time)? The web list was rather messy, but there it was:

Wil Wheaton The kid from Star Trek/The Next Generation describes his site best, ã·so this is the last try to not be grouchy and lame.ä Usually, itâs just lame.

Happy (belated) birthday, Stella.

Posted by Stella on May 2, 2002 3:38 PM:

Bunny: LOL - apparently that exhaustive blog list just ruined my eyes. ;)

I just visited Wil's site, and - to use another television cliche - sadly, it has jumped the shark. I guess that after this year's April Fool's Day joke (where he actually managed to convince everyone that he was reviving Wesley for Enterprise) and the spirited commentary on other Star Trek cast-member pages (I remember him actually putting in a link to William Shatner's website) it was back to journal writing as usual.

And again, thanks to the well-wishers, even on this belated date! :)

Oh, I get it. I have to wait until next week before the story appears there.

Huh? What the hell kind of news organization doesn't put its freely available content on a web site at the same time as the print edition? Guess they gotta force the people who can look at their ads to do so.

The article Stella describes sounds like something I read off of Metafilter a few months back. Evidently, this reporter has a fear of 'blogs, which of course the MeFites explicated to no end.

Back in 1999, Omar G of Terribly Happy covered online journals for the American-Statesman, and a year later, Kim Mellen did the same for the Austin Chronicle (she even interviewed moi).

It's 2002, and for some reason people are mistaking weblogs for online journals. I'd love to see how this article covers it (if only I didn't have to fly a few thousand miles to pick up a copy of the Weekly, dammit! :)

Okay, I read the HW article again for the nth time, and for some reason it still doesn't strike me as a "fear of blog" article (wonder how or why those articles always end up on MeFi? hmmm) - if anything, it strikes me more like a typical Honolulu Weekly "let's dump on how sucky mainstream media is by celebrating real free speech" cover story. Edmon places a huge emphasis on "war blogs" in particular, people whose blogs focus on providing alternative viewpoints on our current War on Terrorism.

Andrew Sullivan, "king of bloggers?" Hmmmm...

Okay, nothing to do with this thread, but whoever it is who just recently accused me of not having a life - hey, buddy, I know where you live. ;)
