Free comics!

May 4th is Free Comic Book Day. This is the day after Spider-man opens in movie theaters, and the public's interest in comic books will be high. It's meant to encourage the public to visit their local comic book store and discover (or re-discover) this American art form.

According to the site's store locator, my two favorite shops, Gecko Books and Collector Maniacs, (both on Wai'alae Ave. in Kaimuki) are participating. I wonder if I can pry myself away from my paper writing assignments and head on over to 'em for a little bit... :)

I discover the artform almost every week down at Collectors Maniac almost every week.

Besides the comics, they've got nearly every single Anime ever made on their shelves.

Current favorite is Rurouni Kenshin. Anyone else watch that?

Let's just say that I've lost a few years of my life total there.

Well, hell, that gives me an excuse to head over to Dragon's Lair and see if the new issues of Lucifer and American Century are published.

I only started collecting comics at the ripe young age of 23, when I discovered The Sandman. Thing is, the only titles I buy are from DC Vertigo. All my Marvel-reared friends look at me funny when I 'fess up to my DC bias.

Except for Optic Nerve by Adrian Tomine, the only indie title I buy.

BTW, Jim Lee is doing Batman.
