Happy Mother's Day!

I hope all of us either wished or were wished a very Happy Mother's Day today. Anyone have any memorable experiences?

Since my sister works at a restaurant, we celebrated yesterday. Much to my surprise, what I said here about restaurants I missed was in part wrong; The Willows has reopened. (Don't blame the restaurant for the looks of the website; I did that myself with the handouts they give you at the cashier's desk, mostly because I'd never worked with tables, and wanted to try it with a four-column layout).

Ah, I was going to mention that when I read your post. I went to Willows not more than three months ago. We didn't eat on the canoe or anything (just the standard buffet), but it was ono!

The dolt that I am, I forgot Mother's Day. (I was totally prepared for it when I left on my trip, but my brain got subsequently scrambled.) Still, I treated my wife and mom (both mothers, after all) to lunch at Stuart Anderson's. I gave my mom and grandma some genuine Malaysian pewter, and my mom got my wife "The Usual Suspects" DVD. (I still owe my wife something. Eep!)

A simple, but pleasant, Sunday.

Ryan, I'm impressed! Despite all of Hallmark's efforts, you forgot Mother's Day?!?

Photos of the family and restaurant to follow; I'm still film-oriented, so pix-to-disk won't be ready till Wednesday.

Heh. Hallmark's influence is a bit diluted in Southeast Asia, I guess. I still have here on my desk at work the Mother's Day cards I bought before I left, though.

Here's the entry I wrote about my last visit to Willows. Only a few of the photos are of the restaurant, though, rather than friends. Yet, isn't that how it should be? Heh.

As I've mentioned in my blog, Mother's Day is never a big commercialized nightmare at my house. Being on a college student's budget, I couldn't treat Mom to dinner. However, I stopped by Liliha Bakery and picked up a dozen of her favorite pastries: 6 cinnamon twists and 6 Coco Puffs. Oh, and I bought a Hallmark card, of course.

She was extremely happy and all-smiles for the rest of the day, and really, what's better than seeing your mother smile? :)

Link, I would've posted that The Willows resurfaced, but honestly thought someone else already had. When it did reopen, we went there for every occasion imaginable, which I now get groans when I bring it up. Still, at their lunch prices, how could you NOT love it?

I took mom to Ciao Mein at the Hyatt Regency. One word...Yummy! I (and the rest of the party) loved it so much, we're returning for Father's Day (dad already gave his OK). Hadn't eaten there since the early 90's, so it was nice to see thir Tiramisu is still the best I've tasted:)

Well, I don't know how we missed it in '99 when it did reopen, but...my sister (who works at Buzz's Steak House out our way) heard one of her co-workers mention going there, so...good food, lots of it. My only (very haole) gripe was if you're gonna serve prime rib, serve potatoes in some form, dammit! Grins...

Man, Willows. Lots of warm fuzzy memories of that place, especially considering that I've shared it with my family (and, okay, one particularly memorable date) over the years. :) Gotta agree with Link about the potatoes, though - last time I was there (ie. the aforementioned date) I didn't see anything of the "spud-ly" persuasion on the table that wasn't potato salad. What I do remember from that meal, though, was being introduced to the portobello mushrooms in balsamic-herb sauce. Mmmmm.

In my case, Mother's Day was spent sending out cards, making a few phone calls, and hitting Kahala Mall for Carl's Jr. (and being disappointed afterwards) - Mom spent the weekend at a private beach resort in Southern Luzon (wow) and Sis spent it with the in-laws. :)
