New Gathering, New Topic

Time's flying fast, which means that it's about time we discussed having another Hawaii Stories picnic/hui. We had so much fun at the first one that we thought it would be good to have another one - that is, if we can find another date. :)

In a way, it's especially important to bring up any and all possible dates, considering all of the changes that have happened since - what with all the new babies and new jobs among our extended ohana, plus a new fall semester coming up. (I myself am already in the middle of complications stemming from my work-permit situation, which may or may not affect whether or not I'll stay here in the United States by next month. Like I've said earlier, there are lawyers involved, so keep your fingers crossed.)

Anyway... potluck, anyone? (And like I've said before, as long as it hasn't been featured on Fear Factor...)

Sign me up. I'm going to be off island Aug 2-12 though. Other than that, any time is good for me.

Well, I'll give it a shot!

Proposal A: Sunday, August 18, 2002, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Magic Island.

If good, say so! If bad, let's hear a Proposal B, C and D!

As always, HawaiiStories.com gatherings are spouse/beau/keiki-friendly affairs!

In addition to rice (the only thing I can cook reliably), my contribution will be in the 'accessory' category -- either drinks, plates and utensils, or anything else needed.

Posted by helen on July 22, 2002 8:44 AM:

Can't make it on the afternoons of Aug 4 or Aug 17.

Posted by lisa on July 22, 2002 1:02 PM:

Ryan- the 18th gets a YAY from me :)

I nominate Stella for the lumpia (please? banana lumpia is like my new favorite food). V and I will bring.. something main dish-y.

Posted by kreeesty on July 22, 2002 2:14 PM:

Proposal A sounds good!

Posted by Linkmeister on July 22, 2002 2:26 PM:

OK by me...I'll bring chips and dip this time!

Ryan, I hope you can find the banner and tarp!

Posted by NemesisVex on July 22, 2002 4:10 PM:

Sunday? I'm off on Sundays, and Aug. 18 is well past that month's Austin journal writers get-together. Oh. Wait ...

Posted by helen on July 22, 2002 4:29 PM:

August 18 sounds okay with me. No idea what I will bring at this point in time.

Posted by Stella on July 22, 2002 9:18 PM:

Lisa, your wish is my command - Filipino-style banana lumpia, it is - which I shall bring, along with myself, on the 18th. :)

Posted by ali on July 25, 2002 6:18 PM:

Aww. I want to go to the picnic, too! I trust that we, off islanders (umm...people not living on O'ahu), will have more excellent photos to see what we missed? :) In the meantime, I'll just drool over the banana lumpia recipe.

Posted by helen on July 25, 2002 11:17 PM:

During the last chat I was torn between KFC and U-Choice Drive In. Someone suggested taro puffs from U-Choice Drive In, so I am going with that and assorted stuff from there like manapua, spring rolls and pork hash.

Posted by Sherry on August 13, 2002 7:14 AM:

Manapua and pork hash ---- yuuuuuummy! Could someone please mail some to Texas?!!!

Posted by helen on August 13, 2002 9:02 AM:

Should I get baked or steamed manapua? Or a mixture of both?

Posted by Ryan on August 13, 2002 10:09 AM:

A mix sounds like a good idea, Helen. I'm a fan of steamed, but everyone in my office goes for the baked variety!

So! Roll call? Stella, Lisa, Link, Kreesty, and of course my family and I... Who else? Sounds like it's time for a little e-mail update!

Posted by NemesisVex on August 13, 2002 4:19 PM:

I'd be beating a dead horse if I joked about attending, wouldn't I?

Posted by Ryan on August 16, 2002 9:51 PM:

Thank god it's the weekend. So how are things looking? Of course I'll be there with Jen and the kids. We're hoping to see Stella, Lisa (will you need a ride?), Christy and Helen. Link sends his regrets, but there are rumors that Peter (and a special guest) and Cheyne (with one or more special guests) will make their HawaiiStories picnic debut. The infamous Panther might at least be able to stop through.

Mitchell? Macpro? Keith? Donna? Jeff? And yeah, Burt should come down too, to see if we're as verbose in person as we are online.

I'm bringing the tent, and a couple of tables on loan from my mommy. I figure I'll also bring the industry-standard pot of white rice, and a few plates, cups, and plastic utensils (unless someone else has some lying around?). I know Stella's planning to bring lumpia, good stuff whether it's her secret recipe or not, and Helen's hinting at a mouthwatering U-Choice Drive In sampler.

Can't wait!

My belly's too big, my clothes no longer fit, and I can barely get my feet into my slippers so I will bypass this round. And I refuse to wear a pa'u and look like a kumu hula:)

Have fun & take lots of pics!

Posted by cheyne on August 17, 2002 12:22 AM:

Food! (makes Stitch growling noises)
lol. I'll be showing up either alone or with a guest (I hope it's the former) that you've read about in my blog, if you're a fan (and deep down inside, we ALL are -- even Dr. Laura).

Anyhow, you can count on me being there -- or Ryan will threaten me with a phone call. Hehe. I'm gonna bring some sweet snack, so save room for it. Anyone opposed to edible chocolate things? Let me know now or snooze you looze!

Posted by helen on August 17, 2002 10:17 AM:

As much as I would like to come on Sunday, I have to bow out due to health related reasons.

Posted by kreeesty on August 17, 2002 11:41 AM:

is anyone allergic to animal fur? i was thinking of bringing my bunny. er, not as a potluck item -- she just needs some fresh air and green grass.

but potluck-wise i was thinking maybe homemade salsa with non-homemade chips?

Posted by Stella on August 17, 2002 12:59 PM:

As I've told Ryan earlier, I will be there, but on a limited capacity - not only will I "out-source" the lumpia over to Ba-Le (and, due to Helen's absence, will also need to add some regular lumpia in there as well - get well soon, H!) but I may also have to make an early exit due to a meeting in the Ala Moana area.

In the meantime, if anyone here wants my banana lumpia, my suggestion is to take the recipe I've linked up earlier in this thread, and make the whole batch entirely from cooking bananas, eliminating the raisins and the jackfruit (well, it's not for nothing that the jackfruit is somewhat related to durian) and adding brown sugar instead of cinnamon.

Posted by Keith H. on August 17, 2002 5:50 PM:

OK, I'll bite.

I have a meeting at church at 12:00 p.m., so perhaps I'll drop by afterward. No guarantees, though, and I probably won't be able to stay long, 'cause I will probably be dead tired by then (I'm running a 15K at Kapiolani Park at 5:30 a.m. in the morning).

As for what I'll be bringing, I haven't decided for sure yet, but it'll be either something sweet (Napoleon's bakery, anyone), or salty (chips).

Posted by Ryan on August 17, 2002 9:40 PM:

Aww, Honukai! But with Jen and I having just come out of 'big belly land', we more than understand! Hopefully new and the little one can make your debut at gathering `ekolu! And Helen, we'll miss you... get well soon!

Stella, all that matters is that you will be there, even if all you can bring is a lump of coal! Same thing for you, Cheyne, though of course the more the merrier. Keith, I hope you can make it! Any snack will do. And Christy, as far as I'm concerned, the little furry one is more than welcome... as long as you are (or rather, the bunny is) prepared for the intense attention of a four-year-old.

We'll be coming straight from Katie's swim class, so please pardon any dampness!

Wow! Wishing you good weather and good food--good company is just a given! Looking forward to the photos!

Posted by Ryan on August 18, 2002 10:31 AM:

Ryan - Rice. And plates and forks.
Stella - Lumpia.
Cheyne - some sweet snack.
Kreeesty - Chips and salsa. (And rabbit, not for dining.)
Keith - Something sweet or salty.
Peter - To be announced.

Ah, the traditional local pot-luck - lots of snacks! From the above, looks like we'll need drinks. I'll see if I can grab a 12 pack of something.

Still holding out hope of seeing Lisa (the now carless one), as well as Panther and Mitchell, who gave definite maybes... and of course everyone else is welcome too!

If you get lost, call me on my BCT (brain-cancer tool) at 372-3372!

Posted by Lisa on August 18, 2002 11:25 AM:

We'll be there (we have a rental Civic) and we're bringing Surprise Food (ie whatever looks good at Foodland). Poke has a decent chance of appearing on the menu, I think. And maybe spare drinks.
