Getting Lost on Oahu

Linkmeister's thread on the Hawaiian Islanders Baseball team got me into remembering a time when a friend and I attempted to see the opening game for the Islanders back in 1980.

Both of us were sort of new to Oahu at the time, being there around 10 months or so but we mostly hung around the UH Manoa area and not traveling far or at night via TheBus.

The trip started from UH Manoa on the #6 bus to Ala Moana Shopping Center. We then walked over to the section of the shopping center where the country buses go. The first bus that came by this stop was a #57. We asked the driver which bus goes to Aloha Stadium and the reply was "any #50, 51 or 52".

Lo and behold the next bus that comes by a few minutes later is a #52. A Kaneohe-Wahiawa #52. We asked that driver if he stops by Aloha Stadium and he says "yes". We board it and off we go to Kaneohe! I had the impression after Kaneohe the bus will head back to Honolulu and then to the Stadium.

Nope. This one goes around the island.

Needless to say we went around the island, seeing the sights of Oahu in the dark.

On the postive side to this mis-adventure was that the game got called off due to rain.

Forgive me for laughing, Helen, but...:)

That 52 is dangerous. I mean... Falling asleep on the 52? That could be the plot of a local cable access made-for-TV movie. I used to ride that bus from town to Mililani, and almost found myself out in Kahuku once.

Very very funny story, Helen! Ah, those country buses. I knew them so well! I think the 52 was the one I took home every day to Kaneohe. The driver on the bus I often rode would make an announcement every day that if you wanted to get to the Wahiawa side in about 3 hours, this was the bus to take. Otherwise, catch the one going the other way, please...I guess he had one too many tourist go the wrong way. :)
