I Oughtta Be in Pictures

Well. I finally did it. I broke down, and I purchased an individual membership with the Hawaii International Film Festival. The selection this year is wonderful, and Roger Ebert's shot-by-shot, three-day-seminar this year is on Citizen Kane. I had to do it.

It was extremely difficult to settle on a schedule, but my choices were limited by my full-time job, my reluctance to be out too late at night too far from home (I'm driving with an expired sticker on my car), and sanity.

So here's where I'll be during this year's festival:
Saturday the 2nd: Scent of Time
Sunday the 3rd: Spellbound and Nowhere in Africa
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th: Roger Ebert's Democracy in the Dark (a shot-by-shot discussion of Citizen Kane)
Thursday the 6th: Russian Ark
Saturday the 9th: Bowling for Columbine
Sunday the 10th: Men with Brooms

As a member, I got to see a sneak preview of Obaachan's Garden, which I definitely recommend. There were things about it that I thought were just really dumb, but overall, it was really well-intended, and gave me some insight on the Japanese-Canadian experience, which I never really thought about before.

So, anyone else going to check out the festival this year?

I'm so jealous, Mitchell! The HIFF is one of those things I've always intended to indulge in, but never found the funds or money. (The good news is, donating to HPR used to be on that same list, but I became a member eventually. So there's hope!)

The Ebert session alone makes it seem worth it. And while I admit I've never read much of Michael Moore's stuff, I'm sure I'd appreciate "Bowling for Columbine."

Say what you will about Hawaii's art community, the HIFF isn't half bad by any measure. If I recall correcltly, it scored quite a coup a couple years back with Ang Lee's "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon."

I'm definitely going to try and check out Bowling for Columbine (pinko-liberal-commie-red-leftist that I am). I also notice that they have the Cowboy Bebop movie. Yesssss, anime is gooooood...

Sadly, Underground Zero is only being shown on Maui.

Bad decision by HIFF. The other September 11 documentaries showing on Oahu are vanilla by comparison.

I made an iCal calendar of films I'd be interested in seeing, but so far the only one I have tickets to is Bench Warmers, part of the Hawaii Panorama 7 presentation.

I've worked on various projects with the director and some of the cast and crew members. They're a bright and eager bunch and I'm looking forward to seeing their creation.
