Cuisine Tony

On Albert's suggestion we tried out a new place called Cuisine Tony located on Kapiolani Blvd across the street from the Pan Am Building.

Part of the adventure of going there is checking out the various dish names that includes a country name to it.

For example the Appetizers list included Escargot de France, Swiss Chicken Wing, Japanese Deep Fried Calamari Ring, British Fish Finger & Fries, Grilled American Spicy Hot Wing and Deep Fried Thai Curry Shrimp Roll.

This sort of makes it sound like it's international in flavor but one dish was called Saturn Pork Chop which Albert ordered. For me I went with a Chinese dish named Fried Rice A la Portuguese.

The portions being served was pretty big, the food was good and the price range was between $7 to $20 for 60 different dishes.

Although I haven't the faintest idea why my pork chop was labeled "Saturn" (was the fried egg on top supposed to be the planet and its rings?), it surely made for pleasurable eating. And as Helen says, the portions are very generous.

I did grumble about the iced tea costing $3.50 (with no refills offered). Good tea and a large glass, but still that's oddly out of line with the general pricing of the food.

A comfortable place to dine and a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

They do take-out, too, so you could brew your own iced tea. :)

Hmmmm, let's see if I can revive an old topic and crosspost (via copy-paste from the only Hawaii-related newsgroup worth reading, aside from soc.culture.hawaii, and that's, of course, hawaii.test:

Adventurous as always, Helen and I tested the new "California Wok" cafe on its opening day. It's at the Macy's end of Ala Moana Shopping Center, on the lower level across from that fancy Italian place, Assagio, and the koi pond. Good thing they didn't participate in the recent Sidewalk Sale because they needed them for their ornate wrought iron tables and chairs which are placed outside around the very tiny kitchen and ordering interior.

A probably too ambitious range of stir-fry options on the menu, fairly reasonably priced. I had the Chicken and Cashews (plus water chestnuts and green peppers) and having been freshly cooked it was certainly better than the stuff from the steam table places. But the sauce was overly sweet to my liking and I wasn't able to finish it all. The two big scoops of rice were dry and not much helped by the sweet sauce, and there was a little side salad of chopped iceberg lettuce and a few slivers of shredded carrot topped with a not very tasty dressing (teriyaki salad dressing?)

I wouldn't bet much money on this place being a long-time survivor at the mall.

"the only Hawaii-related newsgroup"

Got a good link? I'm curious.

"Got a good link? I'm curious."

You don't read the Usenet newsgroups? Best way is with a dedicated newsreader program, but if you have one defined with your web browser then:

hawaii.test
will take you to hawaii.test

and
soc.culture.hawaii
to soc.culture.hawaii

(hey, Ryan, I plug this place enough in them, turn about is fair play) :)

Well, Outlook is my default newsreader, but when I try to access either of these it doesn't find them on the server I've got specified. What's the name of the server I should define?

Link, you need to know what your ISP's news server address is. Usually it's something like news.lava.net.

The good news is (no pun intended), you can browse much of USENET without having to use a news or mail client through Google:

http://groups.google.com

And no problem, Albert! My only comment is, why post about "California Wok" in a thread about "Cuisine Tony"?

Like I told Helen, the Wok doesn't deserve a thread of its own. :)

I use Prodigy, and its news server address is news.prodigy.net. But it just gives me an error when I try to access those two (or any other). Hmm. Will try the google route. Thanks.

See how HawaiiStories is so far ahead of the pack ... the Weekly has only now in its current issue featured a review of Cuisine Tony.

And the reviewer only vowed to next time test the dish that Helen already sampled.

I wonder if HawaiiStories (or perhaps HawaiiNews.com?) could support a 'reviews' section. You know, a similar setup with main posts and comments, with categories for restaurants, movies, music, and the like?

Hmm.

That thought has occurred to me, but then it's pretty easy to use the categories method to dig up older entries (like I did for this one).

p.s. Maybe time for a new poll? Like which movie will win the Oscar?

Great thinking, Albert. 'Twas my thought as well. (Great minds, and all that.)

Now to only get home from my new job early enough to not want to just go to bed...

Cuisine Tony was reviewed on KITV's "On the Menu" feature last night.
