The Returns, The Results

After all is said and done, those who vote have the last word. And we'll soon see what they said. So — will you have the TV on to watch election returns as they come in, locally or nationally, or will you just tune it out and look for the headlines tomorrow morning?

I'll be at a friend's house in Kaneohe, hoping for the best in her long-shot bid for Hawaii Senate. So not only will we be watching the returns, but we'll be watching all the local channels at once!

Any predictions on victors (compared to to who you want to win)? Turnout (higher, probably, but how much higher)? Am I the only one who's disproportionately interested in how the Kids Voting Hawaii results are going to go? (Ballot for ballot, I'll bet they're at least as educated on the candidates as their parents.)

It'll be a long night for me. And so much for NaNoWriMo!

I always enjoy watching as the returns come in and the results unfold. For the political beast, this is like Super Bowl Sunday.

Here's something: at least for the second set of returns, which all the TV stations are waiting and waiting and waiting for, have been posted to the web already.

They're not linked from the main page yet, so I guess the webmaster is waiting until they can go live, but just by tweaking the URL for the actual PDF report, voila, a sneak preview!

So. You heard it here first. Lingle has increased her lead over Hirono, 113,122 to 110,398.

Great scoop, Ryan. :) Anyhow, I'm watching the election returns as I type, although I never stay up late enough to see the end. I'm keeping a close eye on the governor's race, of course. Most of my district's representatives either ran unopposed during the Primary or have such a large support base that there's no close clamoring for the office.

Lingle, 193,609

Hirono, 176,483

Incredible. Incredible.

There are going to be a lot of pale folks walking around tomorrow.

Forty years of power is a long time for any particular party to be in control. For the first time in my life, it actually feels like there is a two-party system in Hawaii. In the long-run, I think we all benefit from that diversity in our political system.

Pale? Not me. I'm happy as a lark! :-)

It's a new beginning most definitely for Hawaii!

I spent most of the night at Lingle headquarters and the energy was just stupendous. We've been waiting for this victory for 40 years., and it has finally happened!

And while we savor our victory today, the real work has just begun to mend the fences and build a better Hawaii for us all.

Oh, I'll be beaming too! But I had friends that were terrified of a Lingle win, worried about all they had invested over the years into the Democratic machine...

I agree, though, Mel, mending fences should be a priority. For all the absolutely ridiculous things Cayetano did and said last night, he did have the right, practiced answer for the media after the final results were released. The people have spoken, and we all need to respect that and move forward together.

My friend, by the way, fell just short of securing that seat in the State Senate. 2004 (it's a half term), here we come!

I listened to various stuff on the radio, didn't stick around long enough to know the results until I saw the morning headlines. One radio show that was unintentionally quite funny is evidently a weekly event where people call in and talk to Jeremy Harris. Aside from one man complaining about litter (mostly leaves) on his street in Aiea, the calls were all gushing compliments to Harris!

Definitely one good thing about the election and that was him dropping out of the race.

Sorry for the delay; I'm recovering from the ritual seppuku I committed after watching the national results in the Senate.

We watched a lot; went to bed after the third printout locally.

A friend said today "Hawaii just got an enema and is feeling a lot better today." I couldn't agree more!!

Did anyone see the irony in Ben Cayetano singing "Unforgettable" at Hirono headquarters?

You just can't make this stuff up.

Posted by Ryan on November 7, 2002 7:16 AM:

Oh, man, kane, that was the single best piece of evidence that it was all over. "Well," I said, "now I know what a 'swan song' sounds like."

Posted by kane on November 7, 2002 8:25 AM:

Yup, it aint over till the fatman sings...

A new (heh! "continued") career in entertainment for Ben? Wonder what he's going to be doing?

Posted by Charles on November 11, 2002 7:46 AM:

Well, after Ben's stunning performance in Baywatch Hawaii, who knows what's next!
