You watch which?

In case you missed it, apparently KHON leads the race to quality(?) at 10:00pm, according to today's paper. The study cited can be found here. Well, maybe. I don't think the 10:00pm news is a major priority for any of the stations, and I don't quite get why that slot would be the one chosen for study; seems to me the post-drivetime news would be a better gauge.

Hmm. Shoulda looked at the methodology section. According to that: "Newscasts are studied in a market's highest-rated time slot for news." Whadda I know?

Post-drivetime is probably well watched, but seeing has how most of Leeward O`ahu is still stuck on the H-1 at 6 p.m., I can see how the 10 p.m. viewership is higher.

KHON falls from the top now and then, but they're usually the leader, and the rest usually scramble for number two.

My order of preference in getting my local news on TV (if I get it that way at all — give me starbulletin.com any day) is KITV-4 (the real news leader, in my book, since Joe is most of the reason for KHON's domination), KHON-2, KHNL-8 (who, despite frequent goofy behavior, I'm beginning to tolerate), and finally, KGMB.

I might be in the minority, by the way, but I do watch mor KHNL-8 than I used to simply because it's their news broadcasts that you can play back at any time via Oceanic's "News On Demand" service. Usually things haven't settled down in this house enough to take in the evening news until 11:15 p.m.

We watch KITV, but it's mostly as either a lead-in or a follow-on to ABC News at 5:30; for whatever reason, we prefer Jennings to either Brokaw or Rather. I can't speak to the other stations, but I do get annoyed with KITV using the same sports tape on both the 5:00pm and 6:00pm programs; I can understand why they do it, but...

My TV news viewing are as follows:

5:PM - KITV

5:30 - usually ABC News

6:00 PM - KITV: They are my prime news channel, but once in a while I'll see what's on the other channels by flipping the remote back and forth.

10:PM - Usually KITV; however if it is a big news day, I'll flip channels at this time slot. And while most of the channels do start their 10PM news on time, one thing I like about KHNL is that they start about 5 to 7 minutes later, which means I can watch the top of the news at 10 on KITV and see what's on top at KHNL a few minutes later... 10 minutes into any newscast and usually, you start getting the feel good fillers after the hard news.

KHON? I don't like Joe Moore and his and that station's huge media bias toward the local Democratic party and the current leadership. I don't know what they will do once the Lingle administration is in charge....

I sometimes watch KGMB News on the weekends.

One other note about KHNL: For those of us who choose not to take Oceanic's Digital Service, the News 8 broadcast is sometimes shown again at 11:30 PM on KFVE TV.

I lived on Oahu for years and was in town last week, in time to catch the election coverage. I never understood Joe Moore's huge popularity and still don't. Oh, he could be goofy on ocassion, but mostly he seems kind of bitter. (Perhaps he never got over his army buddy Pat Sajak's much larger success). Can anyone explain his dominance?

1996 Mayoral Elections

KHON and Honolulu Advertiser invite Morgado, Fasi, and Harris to debate. Harris declines, debate happens anyway with only Morgado and Fasi, and immediately after, Joe Moore has a lengthy one-on-one with Harris.

Sorry, can’t understand Hawaii's love for Joe Moore either.
