Leonids

So who, if anyone, actually saw the meteor shower? According to KITV it was a "bust." I shamefacedly admit I forgot and went to bed, but somebody must have been intrepid among this group!

Man. I didn't even hear about it until after it happened, when I picked up yesterday's paper and got, briefly, excited.

The weather certainly wasn't in a cooperative mood this time, that's for sure. Reminds me of the big eclipse in 1991, where 90 percent of the folks who'd staked out prime viewing spots found themselves staring at the back-ends of thick clouds.

I heard about it on the news and was actually very excited to see it. They said it would be between midnight and 3AM. The best time to see it was between 12:15 and 12:45. I made sure that I was out of the bars in order to see it, but I didnt see a thing. I dont remember if it was a clear night or if the clouds were keeping us from seeing the shower. It could have been the drinks but.. in the end I didnt get to see any meteor shower.
But being from Alaska I have been lucky enough to see the Aurora Borealis on several occasions. Talk about beauty!

I remember that eclipse, Ryan. We camped out in Kaupo to see the eclipse and it POURED! We finally gave up and left the next day, over the rocky road, down past all the cattle grates, past the HumVee/National Guard? that was blocking more traffic from entering the rocky road section. The light was getting dimmer, but there was such heavy cloud cover, we didn't stop. We were just about to go around the curve of Haleakala and lose sight of the "sun" (covered by clouds) when we saw someone standing on the other side of the road, using those sun peeps. You have never seen a car load of people stop so fast and all the doors open at once. We were all out there in the road (three cars, I think), staring at the sun. Just before the moment of total eclipse, the clouds amazingly parted and gave us a good view.

It was a good thing, too, because I'd flown to HI just to see that eclipse! :)

We saw no Leonid meteors here, not even at the prime time (which was right on the cusp of dawn, so it was a doomed attempt anyway).
