HawaiiStories Hui III

Okay, who's up for another bloggers' picnic? Our last two gatherings were held May 18 and August 18... so we're overdue! And since then, we've had a number of escribitionists join our `ohana — all the more reason to meet up, chat, and snack! To get the ball rolling... how's Sunday, February 16 for everyone?

As to the date, the last two were on Sunday, which just happened to work best for me anyway. I think the 16th offers decent time to plan ahead (though perhaps our neighbor island kin have a Honolulu trip planned around that time? Heh heh). And as to the location... there's the old standby Magic Island, but I recall at the last picnic we set our sights on Kailua Beach Park over on Lisa's side of the island.

It might also be a good opportunity to invite and get to know some of the many, many more bloggers, journalers, and escribitionists in Honolulu. Lord knows the blogger meetups have never gathered much critical mass.

So chime in! What do you think about where and when? What sorts of things might we bring to eat, and, yes, to do! (I seem to recall some lamenting about the lack of things to throw about at a previous gathering.) Who have you chatted with, commented on, or "trackbacked" that might be interested in joining us?

I vote for a good "old fashion" bbq, wherever we hold it. We just need an accurate count before the event to make sure we have enough (and not tons of extra) food.

Kailua would be great, but the weather tends to be a bit iffy in Feb, so if we choose to hold it there we ought to have a backup location in a drier place in case of rain.

As for activities, I vote we get a net and play beach volleyball. Much safer with beach balls than the real thing :)

Booyah! Paaarrrttttyy!

How's the parking in Kailua? Used to be bad on weekends (not that it's any better elsewhere, but seems more so).

I sure do wish I could be there in person, but, for sure, will be there in spirit (and in blogation, too).

I am so in need of more Hawaii time, and so disappointed that I cannot attend the/any barbeque to get better acquainted with ohana.

So much missing Maui today, missing Hawaii today, missing...the ocean, the air, the colors, the winds, the vibe.

Separate issue, but if you're missing Maui, try this.

Magic Island on Sunday is fine for me, at least so far. Frisbee, anyone?

The February 16 date is okay with me. As to where, first choice is Magic Island but Kailua Beach Park is okay with me (will try to avoid getting lost using the #57 bus to get there).

As to what I am planning on bringing, I guess if the event is at Magic Island I will get some manapua from U Choice Drive In. If I am taking the bus to Kailua Beach Park more than likey it will be chips and some dip.

If by some chance a KFC exist between the bus stop and the Beach Park, I can bring that instead (of course if one exist a block or two from the bus stop in a different direction I can deal with that too).

February 16 sounds like a good day to me. Of course I wont know my scheduel until a week in advance. I'll ask for the day off and if all else fails, I will just fake sick.
Never been to Magic Island but it sounds fun.

I got a small nerf football to throw around, other than that I like Lisa's idea for volleyball. I guess I will leave the laptop and computer games at home. No need for all that when you have the great outdoors, FOOD and the company of Hawaiian bloggers.

Food, I dont know but I will think of something. Maybe I will have my girlfriend make a local dish..

i'm in! Aw man, we're on that side of the island this time? Well, hopefully I'll have a moped by that point...or I'll try and find zen in the long bus ride there.

(Another aside, please, please, Mr. Web Host, excuse):

Linkmeister: Willows' Menu is enough to make a flight to Honolulu, NOWWW.

Thanks for the ESPN link, too. I'll watch tomorrow a bit. But, I'd rather be walking with my toes in the sand and water about now.

ABOUT THE BARBEQUE:

Is there going to be some sort of Internet event around the same time for those of us who cannot attend the barbeque in person? I realize that anything over the Internet would be a wan imitation of reality, but, we could always exchange pix and recipes and stories.

Man, James. In Honolulu less than two months, and you've already won someone's heart. That would explain the sporadic updates on your 'Journey'!

Booyah! Paaarrrttttyy!

Does that mean you'll be there?

Haken, Cheyne (and everyone else)... after consulting with Windward O`ahu expert Lisa, I think the weather is too unpredictable to risk Kailua in February. I think we'll hit Magic Island in town for the third time, and perhaps look at something over the mountains in the summer instead.

So far, indications are positive for me (and my wife and kids!), Lisa (and V?), Haken (and his `ohana?), Link, Helen, James (and his ipo!), and Cheyne. Cool!

Christy (and Jelly)? Panther? Stella? Didn't Honukai promise she'd make the next one?

And how about some new faces? Jon? Mitchell? Donna? Bruce? And perhaps more intriguingly... any other bloggers out there lurking about? If you're not quite ready to join, at least introduce yourself, and we'd be happy to welcome you!

That has to be a "wait-and-see" thing for me although the chances are certainly greater at Magic Island than on the other side of the mountains where I so rarely venture.

Posted by Ryan on January 13, 2003 8:34 AM:

Would the availability of an exclusive, sure-to-be-a-collectors'-item HawaiiStories bumper sticker be an added incentive?

Since the long-promised T-shirts are still a way off... and I was making a batch for a client anyway!

Of course, if you don't have a bumper, you can stick it to your forehead...

You've gotta come now!

Posted by helen on January 13, 2003 11:07 AM:

What does it say below "HawaiiStories.com"?

Posted by Albert on January 13, 2003 12:23 PM:

No bumper, alas, and I'd feel pretty silly wearing it on my forehead. :)

What does it say below "HawaiiStories.com"?

Why, "Talkstory for the Information Age!"

Posted by honukai on January 14, 2003 10:30 AM:

Didn't Honukai promise she'd make the next one?

I did, but go figure, i'll be out of town until the 18th!

Man, I haven't been to the beach in about a year. I'm so overdue for some tan lines..

Posted by Albert on January 14, 2003 1:05 PM:

BTW, if we smoke, will we have to stay fifty feet away from the picnic site?

:)

Posted by Ryan on January 14, 2003 1:16 PM:

There won't be any need for a tape measure, Albert! I recall from the last hui that you're a pretty courteous smoker for an "infamous" netizen.

Posted by helen on January 14, 2003 9:23 PM:

Last I heard Magic Island did not belong to the University of Hawaii.

Now if we held a gathering at Coconut Island then it is a different matter.

Posted by ali on January 14, 2003 10:55 PM:

Alas, Tom and I will again be anxiously awaiting the posting of the photos and descriptions of the ono food and good fun kine times. :(

Ryan, do you think we could buy a bumpersticker? Please let me know. If printing is problem, would something like CafePress be an option? I'd buy a few T-shirts, coffee mugs and the like!

Posted by Linkmeister on January 15, 2003 9:33 AM:

Thanks for the compliment on the Willows pages.

The bumper sticker is the first step on a slippery slope; how do I then turn down the UofArizona, HPU, and all the other promotional opportunities I'm offered? Grins... Now, t-shirts are another story altogether!

Another reason to come to the HawaiiStories Hui: Journal 21 from the 1000 Journals project will be available for you to leave your mark!

Out of circulation for months, it's resurfaced, and starving for creativity. If you don't know about the project, trust me... these special books are in high demand, and an early journal like Journal 21 is a particularly special outlet for your ramblings, sketches, photography, or random product labels or other scraps.

I want to fill up Journal 21 a bit more before sending it back out of the islands into the unknown. So bring your pencil!
