Blogger BBQ

How time flies! February brings our next picnic. At this point, it looks like our place and time are set: the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 16 at Magic Island (at Ala Moana Beach Park). So let's get a handle on who's coming, with what, and exactly how much geeking out (and kid talk) we're going to see!

I'm down for the infamous tent, a couple of small tables and chairs, drinks and cups and the required pot of rice. And, as I mentioned, I'll also whip out the nifty new HawaiiStories bumperstickers (or foreheadstickers or whatever) and 'Journal 21' from the 1000 Journals Project.

So far we're expecting to see: Albert, Cheyne, Helen, James (and guest?), Lisa (and Vince?), Peter (and family?), and Steve. Oh, and my wife Jen and my two kids of course.

Helen I recall is offering manapua from U Choice Drive Inn or the ol' standby, KFC.

What are the rest of y'all bringing? (Easy items up for grabs would be plates, utensils and napkins.) What else can we do besides compare digital cameras and watch Coast Guard rescue exercises? (Lisa suggested volleyball, and I still have those frisbees.) More importantly, aren't you coming? I'm talking to you, fellow HawaiiStories `ohana member who lives in Honolulu and doesn't have a good excuse not to hang out on a lazy Sunday... Speak up!

Finally, if you're a local blogger who has (or hasn't, until now) lurked about HawaiiStories without venturing a post, now's the time to introduce yourself, join the `ohana, and join us at our third HawaiiStories Hui!

Meekly wave hand and ask:

When in the afternoon is the starting time? 1pm, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm?

Posted by Ryan on January 25, 2003 12:04 AM:

Ah! It's in the graphic but not the post. I put 1 p.m., so it's like a late snacky-type lunch.

Oh, and before I forget... anyone got a boombox?

I still say the more the merrier, and I'm going to name names. Christy? Stella? Donna? Mitchell? Jon? Vivi (and beau)? Madnamo? Jennifer (and Matt)? Grant? Patrick? Bueller? Bueller?

I've been out of the loop for a while, but I'm kind of thinking about coming, since I'll be in town then. Would that be wierd or awkward or something?

Posted by Ryan on January 25, 2003 6:28 AM:

Well! Our first out-of-towner? It'd only be weird if you haven't joined us by then, IMHO.

You still blogging, Mary?

Posted by Vivi on January 25, 2003 8:34 AM:

I'm going to see if the SO and I can make it, time and homework permitting. If we do, we'll probably bring some Popeye's chicken.

Noticed the graphic on the main page last night, but didn't notice the time on it, sorry about that.

In any event still count me in. Plan A will be manapua from U Choice Drive Inn. Plan B would be KFC (if they run out of manapua or had the gathering taken place at 4pm for example).

Hey! I just discovered (for a Super Bowl party) that after an absence of 10 years or so, Doritos is now making their Toasted Corn chips again, so I'll bring those with some dip, it that ain't taken yet.

I still blog occasionally, but not enough. Mostly I lurk and read the Honolulu dailies (read: other people's journals) so I can keep tabs on what's going on. I've posted a couple times before, but nothing memorable, I suppose.

Posted by Donna on January 25, 2003 6:44 PM:

Hello, folks! Since my name got named, I guess that means I better post something. ;)

Sundays are somewhat difficult for me to swing due to standing engagements (church and Okinawan dance classes), but I'll see if I can drop by after dance class.

What time does this gala event end?

I still blog occasionally, but not enough.

Heh. I know what you mean. (When was my last update? Sometime in October?) I have caught your comments here now and then, though.

What time does this gala event end?

It's been a pretty nebulous event. Folks come and go like the tradewinds! Most are around by 2:30 p.m., and things wind down 'round 5 p.m., but last time a handful of us stuck around a fair bit later to see Cheyne (who'd gotten waylaid by the bus system).

Djali's very excited to play with Katie again.

Um ... is a big box of tacos considered cheating?

Also, I have a big car, if anyone wants a ride.

Posted by lisa on January 27, 2003 1:03 PM:

Vince and I are planning on being there, and our contribution will probably be salad. A green one and a mac one, I think.

We may have some spare plastic utensils and cups- I'll check, and if so we'll bring those too.

Can I come?
Huh? Huh?
Can I, please?

Granted, my "Blogs" run more as programming projects and photo albums, but....

Posted by Ryan on January 29, 2003 8:42 AM:

You could always start a blog, Michael! (See "Tenants" list at right.) But I'd love it if you'd joined us. Mac folks are welcome any time!

Helen and I can vouch for you, and testify that you're not an ax-wielding lunatic with a fondness for the color purple and meerkats. At least not on Sundays.

You could always start a blog, Michael!

No need, there will be other non-bloggers there I'm sure, especially apparently retired ones named Ozawa. [cough]

Got to say, it's a "maybe" for me. Depends on the mood which has been just slightly whacko in recent times.

I don't mean to sound self-centered, but I think it's a reason to be proud: I'm on blogwhore.com! out of a hundred people or so, I got chosen as one of the special 12 who will compete with/against each other for the title of ultimo blogwhore! check me out and support this waif-like hawaii boy :)

Posted by NemesisVex on January 29, 2003 9:38 PM:

Ryan -- are you just going to sit there and take Albert calling you a blogger? ;)

Posted by Linkmeister on January 30, 2003 9:05 AM:

Perhaps his new responsibilites as two-child parent are keeping him from doing important things? ;)

Posted by Albert on January 30, 2003 12:31 PM:

Cheyne, do "waifs" have big .... errr, never mind, you keep mentioning it so I have to wonder. :)

But seriously, I've no idea why on earth anyone would want the title of "blogwhore" but since you seem to, I hope you get it!

Never could be a whore, too eager to give it away.

I will definately be there! I havn't had any computer access in the last few weeks so I've been dragging on my journal entries as well. But now that I'm resettled I will be back online more often..

Posted by helen on February 9, 2003 4:50 PM:

The event is a week away. I should ask this since I am bringing the manapua and I have no idea what are the crowd's preferences.

Baked or Steamed or both?

Posted by Linkmeister on February 9, 2003 6:45 PM:

Grins. Good question, Helen. I'm bi-manapua, myself.

Posted by Linkmeister on February 15, 2003 3:36 PM:

Somebody answer Helen's question besides me!

Posted by lisa on February 15, 2003 8:15 PM:

streamed!

Make that 2 votes for steamed.. V just seconded me.

Posted by Donna on February 15, 2003 9:16 PM:

Shucks, I can't make it to the picnic! I'll be at Chuck E. Cheese for my niece's birthday party tomorrow.

I hope to catch you all at the next outing. Have a blast, okay? And take plenty of pictures so I can enjoy the festivities vicariously please. :)

Posted by Ryan on February 16, 2003 7:57 AM:

Sorry we'll miss you Donna. I know for a fact that two hours into Chuck E. Cheese's, you'll be with us in spirit quite emphatically!

Looks like a decent day... and probably not all that hot, either! Oh. And I'll vote steamed too, Helen.

So let's recap. I'm bringing the tent and some tables and chairs (although my spiffy HawaiiStories banner seems to have gone missing!), drinks (sodas and punch), rice (only four cups - we ran out!), some utensils and cups, and since I'm bringing a little stove, I'll bring some hot dogs and buns too. Katie is insisting on bringing Oreos. Helen is bringing manapua. Steve/Link is bringing Doritos Toasted Corn Chips. Christy offered a big box of tacos. Lisa and Vince will bring tossed salad and mac salad, and some utensils and cups too. Vivi, if she can make it, will bring chicken.

James, Michael, Cheyne, Albert, Peter and Mary/Lemur are bringing ... well, at least themselves!

I'm heading down soon to start setting up. Call my cell phone - 372-3372 - if you get lost getting there or need to play "Marco Polo" by cell phone once in that crowded park!
