The First

I've been wandering around HawaiiStories for some time, getting my feet wet. Now I'm comfortable enough to make my introduction

Hello. I'm Anaiis. I moved to Hawaii eight months ago. I'm originally from South America, but was raised on an island, and exhibit many of the island characteristics--barefot at home, dislike of cold, love of typhoons and tsunamis.

This is my third year in college. I am majoring in journalism. I love to write, and came upon HawaiiStories by accident. I have not met many writers here, so I was pleased to stumble in.

I hope to get to know all of you better, and perhaps, by chance, make Hawaii feel more like home.

hi Anaiis!
i am new here also! nice to meet you!

Welcome, Anaiis! Special greetings from this Journalism graduate.

Come to think of it, HawaiiStories member Jon, a regular media commentator, is also a J grad.

Online publishing is, not surprisingly, a natural fit for many of us. The joy of writing and critical commentary without that pesky "editor" element!

Hello Anaiis,

[Putting on journalism hat]
How do you pronounce Anaiis and is there a special meaning to the name?
[Removing journalism hat]

Hmmmm... UH Journo, eh?

Some words of wisdom from my experience at UH Journo:
1. Get cozy with the office staff.
2. Intern. Intern. Intern.
3. Make sure they're good places to intern.
4. Toot your own horn.
5. Love the process.

From your introduction it appears you've already got #5 down. Hope the same goes for the rest of my list. Welcome to the party.

Almost forgot: Which track are you taking?

It's always a pleasure to welcome another (or soon to be) UH journalism graduate. We are far and few between.

Hello, Heidi, nice to know I am not the only newbie. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, all.

Ryan and Jon: It's wonderful to come upon journalism grads. I am certain we will have much to talk about.

I agree with you Ryan, I have a little column online where I am free to take to my soapbox without the editor element. I did an internship at a paper recently where the editor (and publisher) elements were extremely prominent. In an ideal world, a story would not be pulled because of conflicts with 'readership'. But this is not an ideal world, is it?

So I take to my online column. I have started running themes, this month I focused on women because of International Women's Day. Next month is right around the corner, I may need to brainstorm some ideas for that, and would welcome any comments. Maybe something about Hawaii...?

Anaiis. Ana-ees. Print media. Further questions? Comments? Complaints? Talk to my PR rep. =)

Ah, print. The One True Path. (Well, at least to other print track grads.) As Mr. Burns would say, Ex-cellent...

I've enjoyed both your creative and dynamic personal blog, as well as your "columnist" blog. You do diary reviews? Nifty!

If you ever want to try your hand with much drier fare, if only to sharpen your writing teeth and to build your portfolio, be sure to check out my fledgling project.

Speaking of UH journalism, please, please tell me the report in the Weekly isn't true ... Lance Collins in line for editor of Ka Leo next year???

(Is that guy going to spend his entire life as a student at UH or what?)

p.s. His hideous new hair color should alone disqualify him. It looks like a Blue Hawaiian, slightly more neon.

Though this is getting a bit off topic (that being "Hi, I'm new!")... thanks for the heads up, Albert. I'm actually quite glad to be completely disengaged from that whole universe.

So this Lance Collins is the same guy some folks want fired for questionable editorial judgement?

As a Ka Leo vet (who like all vets thinks everything went downhill after they left), I'm as bemused as anyone about the latest controversy. On the other hand, I always considered it a hallmark of sorts of student journalism. When I was editor, I was criticized and even picketed by folks ranging from pro- and anti-abortionists, pro- and anti-gay and lesbian groups, to pro- and anti-sovereignty groups. NOW hated us, the administration hated us, and the governor hated us. It was a scene, daddy-O!

I guess my point is, at the heart of it, I'd defend the student journalist's right to make a fool of himself or herself. Restrictions on content are not acceptable.

I'll never understand you journalists.

Getting back on topic...

Welcome to HawaiiStories.com!

Actually, I am at HPU. Not too familiar with the going-ons at UH.

Thanks you Ryan, I am glad you enjoyed my blog and columnist spot. That's the soapbox. As a journalist, I am sure you know what it's like to have to try to be objective. Find facts. Regurgitate facts. Who what why where when how and a good hook in the lead to answer the classic "why should I care?"

The column is a way for me to jump on my soapbox at whim. It's every journalist's dream when people tell you they want to hear what -you- think. And best of all--I am my own editor. (Freedom feels much like being thirteen again and being told that mom and dad will be gone to Arica for the weekend.)

I do diary reviews, yes. It started during the boom of diary and blog reviews on Diaryland. My feathers were ruffled when, while searching for someone to review my site, I realized that people were basically just grading layouts. So many review sites restricted the writing of those who were not HTML savvy that I simply had to step in.
I created Pretty On the Inside Reviews, and worked with them for some time. The site concept was based on the writing and the portrayal of the diarists, and not solely on their web designs. I retired as my schedule began to fill, but with more and more gaps blotching the social horizon this semester, I find that it's good time the column matured into a review site as well. And not just diaries. The objects of revision depend on the topic I pick every month. It keeps things interesting for everyone.

You have my curiosity by the throat at the idea of sharpenning my writing teeth, Ryan. I am all ears. Mail me.

Thanks for the welcome, all. I hope to get to know you more and more as time passes.
