Kuhio Day
Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaole was born on March 26, 1871 in Koloa, Kauai, and was in line to become king before the monarchy was overthrown in 1893. He went on to represent Hawaii in Washington, and was credited with paving the way for significant local growth, from the dredging of Pearl Harbor to establishing the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
The territorial legislature designated his birthday a holiday in 1949. Today, the "day off" is often mooted by Spring Break, which usually coincides with it. Will you be working tomorrow? What will you do to mark the birthdate of "The Citizen Prince"?

Kamehameha Day makes perfect sense as a state holiday, it would even perhaps be justified to officially celebrate the last Queen's birthday. But I've never understood why Kuhio should rate.
(And this from a Texan, a state which has as many strange holidays as Hawaii.)
Well, for me, unless I spring for a net cafe, it will be an offline day. On the other hand, considering some of the net discussions I've unwisely gotten into today, I probably should be grateful to good ole Prince Kuhio. :)

You learn something new everyday.
Although I am familiar with Hawaiian history, I did not know the 26th was a holiday.
I celebrate everything from Andy Warhol's birthday (August 6th) to Diary Day (January 14th), so I will find a great way to celebrate the day of the Citizen Prince.

I'm working on Kuhio Day. In fact, it is Kuhio Day, and I'm writing this from work.
I'm definitely dreaming about being in Koloa, Kauai today in honor of him. I love that town.
