Joe Moore, Trini Kaopuiki to Wed

Both viewers and staffers of KHON's evening newscast were stunned last night by an on-air announcement by longtime anchor Joe Moore that he and former weather anchor Trini Kaopuiki are engaged and plan to marry in June. Drawing out his traditional signoff even longer than usual, Moore also announced that he would be seeking approval from FOX management to go on sabbatical — both for the wedding, and for a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to star in a journalism-themed reality series planned on a major network.

Acknowledging that his interactions with his fiancé were "a bit icy" and regularly laced with barbs, Moore noted in a subsequent statement that their relationship was "like one of those romantic comedies when two people who hate each other end up together."

KHON News Director Dan Dennison said he had no idea Moore was planning to turn yet another news broadcast into an opportunity for personal grandstanding. But he also said he sensed something "a little different" in the otherwise painful hostility Moore exhibited toward Kaopuiki during the short time they shared the screen.

"Unlike most viewers, I knew what was going on behind that big desk," Dennison said.

"What can I say? They deserve each other," said Rick Blangiardi, the station's General Manager. "And I can't imagine us having any problem with giving Joe some time off."

As for Moore's other plans, he's keeping mum. However, industry insiders are quick to point out similar silence on the part of recently vindicated former KHON reporter Mary Zanakis, and reports in the trades about a possible "Big Brother" spinoff on ABC featuring regional news and media personalities.

Former KITV anchor Tiny Tadani was the first to publicly mention the series and hinted at his involvement last week, but the claim was immediately dismissed by nearly all island residents possessing three or more brain cells.

Moore, when asked about how his engagement would affect his current marriage, replied: "Who do you work for, FOX?"

Happy April first, all.

So what news stories would you like to see?

OH MY GOODNESS! That was so well-written that you had me going up until the very end. I was thinking to myself, of all days for me to miss the news! =8-0

I was about to freak out if Trina was actually going to MARRY Joe Moore. I was going to take that girl to Hank's and have a loooong talk with her!!

Happy April Fool's Day, Ryan!

Got me! I thought the Blangiardi "quote" was dead-on, having heard him with Leahey forever.

So I got carried away.

Priceless, Haken! Thank the geek gods for the '@' sign. I think it's great! Only Gannett's lawyers would disagree.

damn. I almost choked on my Oreos!.

My first thought was "Trini, why Joe?" and then I pondered if it could be one of those "sweeps week" publicity stunts: "Bachelor News Anchors married by Hawaii viewers."

When are they going to do a Hawaii-style competitive eating event like FOX's "Glutton Bowl?" My boyfriend and I were simultaneously aghast, amused and amazed when we watched that last year -- the Japanese winner weighed a hair over 100 lbs and bested 200-300 lb American behemoths!

We proposed new food challenges: peel 'n eat shrimp (51-60 size), 7-layer Jell-o, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches (no milk), SPAMŽ musubi, ume, day old POI, natto, li hing mui, manapua, rainbow shave ice, tsubushi-an mochi...the list could go on and on!

Haken, that's great! I confess I don't see the @ sign Ryan refers to, but...

Posted by macpro on April 1, 2003 10:58 PM:

The @ sign is in the URL. Look in the ADDRESS window of your browser (where the http://www....) part is.

Posted by Haken on April 2, 2003 3:22 AM:

BTW, if you click on the title or "more," it'll take you to the complete article.

Also, browser that prevents spoofing will remove the "@" and everything before it, that's why Linkmeister doesn't see it.

Damned Yahoo browser; keeps me from seeing things, huh? Grins...

That was an awful April Fool's Joke...even if it over 3 years old! I had lunch with a friend of Joe ZMoore's wife (real) last week and when she mentioned her friend Mrs. Moore I told her he divorced her and married Trini ....simply because my hisband had told me that years before...sometimes rumors like this (idiotic by the way) are just not funny to spread. But whatever...I guess whoever started it thought it was funny at the time....bizarre.
