Sweetheart!

Don't you love it when you walk past someone you think is one of the most adorable, most desirable people you've ever seen ... and they look at you and give you a sweet smile, as if they'd read your mind and were pleased with the compliment?

Don't you love it when you wake up on yet another morning with a miserable cold, quietly cursing the fact that it's Thursday, then make it all the way to work (wondering if you can make it through the week) when you finally realize that it's actually Friday?

I didn't know what time it was ...

Happened to me last week. Got out the radio to listen to the latest news (a hideous habit I am trying very hard to break) and heard that the Metropolitan Opera broadcast was about to begin.

Doh! I thought it was Friday.

Won't I just love it when this confounded NPR/HPR "pledge drive" is over!

Michael Titterton is not a sweetheart.

Oh, I don't know. Michael is a pretty good correspondent. He's responded quickly the four or five times I've e-mailed him. And he is so much better than previous HPR boss/witch Anna Kosov it's off the charts. I still remember a fund drive about ten years ago where she just refused to go back to programming at all until their intermediate goal for that time slot was met. You could hear the talent (Alan and a few others) just sputtering in disbelief.

I was at a meeting once when Michael Titterton called me a xenophobe. (I told him I like to support HPR, but I don't like calling operators.) It's okay, though. And online donations and pledges were implemented soon after, which was my point.

During pledge drives, every single one of their online personalities, when struggling to fill dead air, will say something extraordinarily goofy. I cringe, but, I know it ain't easy.

Sounds like HPR needs its own thread. Personally, I'd like to read about more "sweethearts"! Who has brought a smile to your face this week?

Got off to an early start with a smile this week when my new friend, Travis, stopped by my table at the beach park. (This is not the Ala Moana Foodland "Travis" who is the sine qua non of sweetheart.)

He definitely gave me a smile with his lament about how silly it is to smoke the ice pipe, all that fussing around, making sure you flame it enough to get it smoking but not so much you burn it, etc.

So much easier just to roll a joint and smoke it, he said.

Winding up his most amusing lament, he sighed, "why do we do it?"

"Because we're all crazy," I said.
