Wedding fashions

Once again I am requesting help, this time in finding engagement and wedding clothes.

First on the list is Pineapple Moon clothing for our engagement photos- there's a great silk design they have, with a pattern of plumeria blossoms and leaves scattered in a wide pattern. Currently, they're only sold through the MX- any military types out there willing to help?

Next is an Ao Dai, or traditional Vietnamese wedding costume. I haven't really found anyplace specializing in these here.

The Pinapple Moon pattern is not the traditional aloha pattern, but an upscale modernized version. They were selling these at the`Iwilei Costco last month; however, the seafoam green (not lime green or periwinkle blue) dress I bought was too big (I need an XS) and they were out of the matching men's size M. I called the manufacturer directly and begged, but they wouldn't sell to me (although, Ryan, do you think HawaiiNews could do, ahem, some kind of fashion thing that might be convincing enough to warrant a matching set of their clothing? :)

For the Ao Dai, you'd think I could've found someone in Chinatown, and I did, sort of- one woman (Due?) who does alterations and whatnot. I wasn't too terribly fond of her fabric selection, though, and I'd really like to find a shop that specializes in Ao Dai. I really want a butter yellow silk with a gold pattern (dragons or bamboo). You can't even order this stuff online- there are 4 sites, and the selection isn't great.

If anyone else is getting married this year, I'd love to compare notes. I haven't even gotten into the catering bit yet- we're thinking a backyard luau-type reception, so tips on that would be appreciated.

Don't know if this is an option for you, but my wife's cousin took a trip to Hong Kong and had her cheung sam (Chinese dress) made for her wedding. It was cheaper than anything she could get here in the US.

I'm guessing the Ao Dai is similar? Besides, Hong Kong has a large Vietnamese population, I'm sure someone there can make it for you.

If the Hong Kong angle is a possibility - for the fabric, if not the entire dress - let me know. I actually know people who import textiles to sell here. They might not carry what you want already, but they might know where to find it.

Ryan, do you think HawaiiNews could do, ahem, some kind of fashion thing that might be convincing enough to warrant a matching set of their clothing?

Er, I'm not sure if fashion reviewers regularly get "review copies" of clothes! If anything, you'd just get an invitation to the next fashion show at Kahala Mall!

Thanks for the suggestion. I was actually trying to look for something locally to avoid traveling to California, where my future mother-in-law can arrange having one made. They're around $200, so the cost isn't really a factor, but the convenience is.

Did you ever find you someone who makes Ao Dai? I'm just wondering, because I've had the same type of trouble location someone who can make me one.

You guys can find MANY places that do alterations & tailored made professional ao dais in L.A. (Orange County's Little Saigon community, off of the 22 FWY) or if you're not in the US, then get your measurements made & then send them 2 someone who's going 2 Asia (China, Vietnam, Hong Kong or even Taiwan) they have many speciality shops that would make dresses according to those measurements. Hopefully this helps.

Ao Dai is custom made only. It is an elegant, demure, and yet sexy outfit that suits people of all ages. Anthony Grey described the Ao Dai in his novel Saigon as "demure and provocative… women seemed not to walk but to float gently beneath the tamarinds on the evening breeze." The Ao Dai covers everything but its thin fabric hides almost nothing!

Browse through our website and select one or more of our select catalogue. These vary form simple and elegant silk to elaborate traditional Ao Dai.

Do NOT shop at "AODAI4U" they steal your money and never send your dress. Don't give them your money. I'm not the only one who had this happen with this shady company. I'm trying to warn everyone I can about them. They're terrible. And they will NOT refund your money.

Really? If we did business that bad, we woulnd't grow this well :) If you are running a similar business, you'd better improve your service/quality, don't frame your competitor because we are not the only one. There are many other competitors and you just waste your time try to shoot us all down by your dirty trick. Use your time to improve your service and quality, it's better for all.

My 2 sisters and I just put in (3)orders for AODAI4U for our oldest sis's wedding. I did recieve a manufactured (I didn't order a custom) dress but it was the wrong size and color. I returned it months ago, and I still have no dress. 2 out of 3 sisters have no dress. I fly out for my sister's wedding tonight. I was checking this site to see if there was anywhere I could go to buy a pre-made one today. Interesting to see the discussion on the company that I had terrible experience with. I emailed them several times. I got a reply once that they rec'd my return in APRIL. But I never got the ao dai. Everyone BE WARNED!

Fraudulent company. I ordered a custom Aodai. They said it would be done in 5-14days and I needed it for a wedding. They even assured me that the negative comments posted were from competitors trying to frame them. Do not trust AODAI4U. In my history of dealing with this company they have dragged things out, lied about timelines, asked for more money, and finally ignored my messages. After many requests that they send me my order they claimed they shipped it by registered mail but would not provide the tracking information. Needless to say it never arrived (over 2 months now). Do not buy from this company.

I have a general question regarding Ao Dais, not relating to this thread.
My boyfriend and I plan to get married within the next 2 years. He is Vietnamese-Laotian and I am French-Canadian. We are planning to incorporate some Vietnamese elements in a Western-style wedding, so the Ao Dai would come in to factor (to be changed into after the wedding dress). We are planning to visit Vietnam in December and thought it best to buy there. (After reading this thread, it has made me decide!=) I am unfamiliar with what style, colour and pattern is appropriate for an Ao Dai to be worn at the reception.
Can anyone offer me some advice? I would appreciate any comments you may have.

Hi Jaimie,

Congratulations on your engagement.... Absolutely get one made in Vietnam if you can! They can be made in about several hours to 2 days -- can be altered to fit perfectly and are very inexpensive there compared to online or US prices. The fabric (even silk) should cost about $10-12 USD and a tailor made one (including fabric)will be probably less than $30 (all depends on how good your bargaining skills are, fabric and style) Wedding ao dai are a little more money because they are fancier. Tradition suggests high mandarin collar, long sleeves, fitted bodice, length is longer these days (almost down to ankles), trad. wedding color is red but can be any color that suits you. I saw many women in many beautiful modern ao dai styles there that can give you some good ideas if you wish to stray from the traditional style.

I have never ordered an ao dai online... am curious if anyone has had experience with skyriveronline.com?

I agree with disapointed about Ao dai 4u... I had the same experience and MR NGO isn't even honest engouh to answer my emails. I might be Swiss but I'm not rich, I love vietnamese dresses and I thought I could trust such companies. I also needed it for a wedding and I was a shame of having a normal dress when everyone wanted to see what these famous ao dai's were. It seems like they have no guts to answer. Shame on them... All my money for the wedding went for this dress and no I did soend the money but never got the dress.

I found another shop! It is www.ttsilshop.com. They are a little more expensive then aodia4u, but hopefully could be more dependable. I am looking for a aodai for my 10yr old daughter that is currently in karate. She does a beautiful fan form & ripped her last dress. I was trying to order from aodai4u but they show they were not taking orders due to business restucturing. Hopefully everyone will be reimbursed for there dresses. Good LUCK!!

Actually, I had a very bad experience with aodaivinh.com. First, the order was late so I could not wear the ao dai to a wedding as I had planned. Then, when I finally received the ao dai (and I had ordered 5 of them!), it was incomplete. I had paid extra for matching scarves; well, one scarf was missing and the measurements of the rest were not what I ordered. The company was very non-responsive to my emails, eventually asking me to pay extra to get the right scarves. It is too bad, actually, because their site has good ao dai which I would have liked to order more!
