HawaiiStories Hui IV

School's out, summer's officially here, sounds like the time is right for another local-style "Blogger BBQ"! No doubt there's been lots to catch up on since we last got together, and as always, we've also had new members join our 'ohana in that time as well. I don't want to waste a single sunny day... let's pick where and when and start plotting the menu already!

We're definitely due for a picnic. (For the uninitiated, we last got together in February (and in May and August of last year.) I'm anxious to see everyone again... and on top of everything else, Jen found the official "HawaiiStories" banner — we've got to show that off again!

To get things started, I propose Sunday, June 22. Too soon? Or just oerfect? And should we stick with our traditional spot at Magic Island, or try for the oft-proposed Kailua Beach?

That's scrapbooking day for the Wen, which means I have the girls for the day. I think Aeryn might enjoy an afternoon running around with Katie.

Posted by lisa on June 5, 2003 11:56 AM:

Sounds good to me! I think we should give Kailua a chance, and let Magic Island be the backup in case of bad weather.

I recommed we start a bit earlier than normal for Kailua, though, as it tends to fill us quickly on nice weekends. 11am or even earlier would be a better start time than 1 or 2.

Burgers & hot dogs would be fun.

Kailua Beach in the morning sounds like a nice change of pace. I'm sure we can arrange carpooling for the commuting-impaired, too.

As usual, I'm in for the tent, drinks, and - if someone else provides the expertise - the small propane grill!

Posted by Beth on June 5, 2003 3:56 PM:

I'm in for the 22nd!

I'm always up for a good bbq! And if there are going to be a few kiddies around, we'll bring food and puppets!

Posted by helen on June 5, 2003 7:36 PM:

I'm pretty much free on the 22nd and while I have no preference on where it is held, I haven't decided on what to bring to this picnic yet.

Of course some where down the line someone would finalize the place and actual meeting time?

I take it TheBus passes kind of close to Kailua Beach?

Posted by James on June 6, 2003 12:35 AM:

I'm sure I can scheduel a day off for what ever date we end up deciding on. Kailua Beach sounds nice, I've been there once before via Thebus but didn't get to enjoy it for very long.

I'll most likely be bringing something in bulk from Zippy's. Probably chili.

Posted by Linkmeister on June 7, 2003 10:00 AM:

I haven't been to Kailua Beach since 1984. That was three cars ago--I hope I can still find it if that's the final selection and the time of day is a fit. ;)

Can I come even if I can't remember the last time I posted?

Posted by cheyne on June 9, 2003 1:20 AM:

Hmn...Kailua sounds great. Date seems fine right now...what time? Can I bring Scott? Pwease... I'm sure he'll will be able to transport my scrawny ass there.

I'll most likely bring some sorta cracker or cookie thing. This was a predictable habit of mine since elementary -- back then I used to volunteer to bring the paper plates and cups because they were the easiest thing to bring. But I digress...

post the finalized time when you know, Ryan and I'll be there :)

Posted by Ryan on June 9, 2003 12:34 PM:

Well, it looks like Sunday, June 22 at 11 a.m. at Kailua Beach Park is a winner! So, let's go with that and scribble it on our calendars.

Beth, and anyone, yes, little people are welcome and expected! I look forward to letting Katie and Aeryn run about, and seeing any other HawaiiStories offspring.

Zippy's, eh, James? That's cool with me! Mmm... Zippy's chili!

Christy, we'd especially like to see people who can't remember the last time they posted. And Cheyne, you can bring Scott... or whomever strikes your fancy when picnic day comes! :)

Who else? What else? I'll send out an e-mail reminder soon, too.

you know...i'm pretty muc like that too. when summer vaca starts i am all for the family meetings and especially shopping!!! hey a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. that's probably one of my most favorite sayings. have fun this summer to all! much love....anela

Posted by helen on June 11, 2003 10:10 AM:

Is there a fast food place like KFC by Kailua Beach Park?

Posted by Beth on June 17, 2003 4:57 PM:

Wahoo! A party!

I fractured my tailbone at rehearsal for that god awful play I'm doing, so I'm sorry to inform you that I'll have to STAND during the event, but a nice day at the beach sounds too good to be true.

I don't know what Baz will want to whip up (he's the cook!), but I'll let you know later this week.

Yay!

Posted by ruth on June 17, 2003 7:11 PM:

Hmmm... June 22 is too soon for me. I'd like to actually make it out to one of these events. If not this time, maybe next.

Posted by Jennifer on June 17, 2003 9:42 PM:

I won't be able to make it on Sunday. I have a lunch grad party for a friend scheduled that same day.

Posted by lisa on June 18, 2003 11:45 AM:

Ryan- if you bring the grill, we can bring some dogs, buns, and condiments.

Let me know if you need help with the paper plates, napkins, plasticware.. didn't we all forget napkins last time?

Helen- KFC isn't too close to the beach, but The Bus does stop a block and a half away from it. You want the first Kailua town stop for KFC- right after the little bridge at Hamakua. Cross both Pali and Hamakua and KFC's right there, near the topiary chicken tree.

If you don't want to catch the bus again to the beach, Vince and I can pick you up- it's right on the way for us. Let me know!

One important thing I just thought of- where are we meeting up on the beach? Kailua Beach isn't exactly small. We can pick a pavillion (if one's open), a grassy spot on the Lanikai side (across from Buzz's).. thoughts?

Posted by Ryan on June 18, 2003 3:33 PM:

I'll bring the grill! I can also bring the proper range of utensils and paper products.

Hey, if we can get a pavilion, maybe we don't need the tent? We'd still use the banner, of course. What are our chances? How early would one have to show up to stake one out?

I also can provide transportation for one from town, if you're willing to share a ride with two potentially noisy kids and two parents with conflicting taste in traveling music...

Posted by Linkmeister on June 18, 2003 9:03 PM:

I don't know if I can make it, but if I can, somebody put up some directions from the town side.

Posted by Ryan on June 19, 2003 8:47 AM:

I hope you can make it, Link! As for directions, the city actually has a page just for you! For a bird's-eye view, I created this map at MapQuest.

Posted by helen on June 19, 2003 10:02 PM:

More than likey I will be bringing either chips or cookies on Sunday.

Posted by ali on June 20, 2003 5:55 PM:

Tom and I will be anxiously awaiting photos! :) We still hope to attend someday!

Posted by cheyne on June 21, 2003 11:17 AM:

just rsvp'ng myself and scott. not sure what we'll bring, but sounds like the dessert category is lacking, so i'll bring something that has sugrrr.

i'll look for the banner...

see yous guys on sunday!

Posted by Ryan on June 22, 2003 8:02 AM:

Don't forget to have my number with you! It's 372-3372.

To stake out a spot, I think we'll be starting on the northwest end — right at the bend on Mokulua Drive — then work our way southwest toward the Buzz's or Lanikai end.

See this map at Yahoo! Maps (but ignore the star). Kailua Beach Park is split in two lobes of sorts by a stream. We'll hope to grab a spot near the sand and parking lot on the left end, but otherwise move right, past the stream, in our search.

So start at that parking lot and wander southeast/right along the shore to find our blue-topped tent and our little green HawaiiStories banner!

Local weather report, 8:45am:

I observe some mauka clouds, but toward the beach it looks bright and sunny. Tradewinds are out and about at the usual wind speed, and humidity is slightly above normal. I predict a nice day at the beach!

Posted by Linkmeister on June 22, 2003 10:27 AM:

Events have overtaken me, so I won't be able to make it. Damn! Take lots of photos and post them soonest, folks, and have lots of fun!

Posted by Albert on June 22, 2003 1:47 PM:

Looking forward to reports and photos.

My passport has expired so I can't travel to foreign places. :)

Posted by Bruce on June 22, 2003 2:36 PM:

Don't mind the green glow from over the horizon, Taokyo-sai...that's just me in a fit of envy.

So how 'bout those pictures?

Posted by lisa on June 22, 2003 4:45 PM:

Well, about time for excuses to start rolling in.. we know who wasn't there :)

Obligatory group photo to follow. I didn't get one on my camera, so you'll have to wait, sorry.

Weather was gorgeous if a bit windy, and it was a fantastic time over all. The hot dogs were eventually grilled, and no trees or beachgoers were harmed in the process.

Posted by Beth on June 22, 2003 6:02 PM:

No excuse here...I didn't wake up until well into the afternoon. I was utterly exhausted, and enjoyed every minute of it! I dreamed of all of you fondly!

Can't wait to see pictures....

xoxox,
Beth

Okay posted the photos from today's hui in the HawaiiStories Gallery.

Posted by NemesisVex on June 22, 2003 8:33 PM:

God, I hope the water at Kailua Beach was warm. I distinctly remember it feeling quite nice the last time I was there.

Posted by helen on June 22, 2003 8:47 PM:

The hot dogs were eventually grilled, and no trees or beachgoers were harmed in the process.

Except for the tree(s) that was used to make all those matches and chopsticks that was used to keep the grill going.

Posted by Ryan on June 22, 2003 10:19 PM:

It took six guys to make eight hot dogs. You sure tasted all that love in those buns!

Um.

Anyway. I've posted my picnic photos in my gallery as well.

Posted by ali on June 23, 2003 8:04 PM:

Wow! What a beautiful photos! Pretty scenery and you all look like you were having so much fun!

Ryan, you and Jen oughta sign up Katie as a model. She's such a natural!

Posted by Michael J Wise on June 23, 2003 8:49 PM:

When did you guyz leave? Judging from one of the pictures, I must have walked right over the sand you guys were sitting on at one point... (wimper)

Sorry I missed it.

Posted by Albert on June 24, 2003 10:10 AM:

Cool photos! Thanks.

Just as well I wasn't there. Scott probably would have slapped me up against the head for looking too intently at bare-chested Cheyne. :)

Posted by Ryan on June 24, 2003 12:23 PM:

Aw, thanks, Ali! And Michael, we missed you? Aue! We were there 'til almost 3 p.m. We did speak wistfully about your Ben & Jerry's ice cream at the previous hui.

I'm already thinking of maybe September 21 for the next picnic (trying to make it quarterly at least!), so be sure to save the date!

Posted by Michael J Wise on June 24, 2003 5:55 PM:

had 4 pints, assorted flavors.
Sniff... Oh well. I don't eat much of it these days, trying to cut down a bit.

Posted by cheyne on June 25, 2003 1:20 AM:

D'oh! Sorry you missed us too Michael...we'll try again next time.

Beautiful photos Ryan...I really must invest in a camera like yours -- great quality and focus! I think it's funny that I'm like the first six photos in the picnic gallery...lol. I love the picture of me and Zach!

Soo cute!
