As Seen on TV?

As mentioned on Donna's excellent life blog, KHON's Kirk Matthews is planning a short feature on local weblogs and our humble HawaiiStories community. Perhaps airing on tonight's 5 p.m. show, he's at least talked to Donna and I. I shared with Kirk some background on blogging in general, and spoke about the way locals here and away can connect via the web. Kirk also got a brief tour of our site, as well as the sites of many of our members. Will we see your blog on TV?

Kirk was great, and gave me a short tour of their "new" studio (I'd only been to their old location) before we sat down at Jai's workstation. After struggling with Windows NT and Netscape, the background was set. But as the camera rolled, I had a hard time speaking as I kept wondering about the smudge on my glasses and whether there were any remnants of breakfast in my beard.

I'm not a fan of being photographed, but I'll do almost anything to evangelize about online journals. I hope the story turns out okay, and that it brings us more web-savvy, talkstory-hungry locals.

Kirk has a great writing style which works well for tv stories, a deep interest in the online realm and also he's just a decent human being...it's just too bad that for some reason or another the general public doesn't seem as interested in his as they are Joe Moore...

Good god, that was a lot of me talking. Where was Donna? What was with my voice? And Leslie Wilcox very nearly choked on the word 'blog. Still, lots of shots of the site - Helen's gallery, the poll, the member buttons (Link's, for example)...

Should encode it and put it online for posterity...

Er, yes, please do! (Goes off to check sitemeter...)

Grins...

I missed it...too bad KHON's website still isn't back up yet. Not that it was any good when it was working. I hope when it does get up and running it'll have a feature to playback stories online like KHNL does.

Er, yes, please do!

We aim to please! To see the segment in RealVideo format, click here. (To download instead of stream, use this link.) My apologies in advance for any adverse health effects triggered by my on-screen appearance.

I saw the story, which is why I'm here checking you out. So, where can I get more info on doing my own blog site? Does one need to be very computer literate? Does it require a lot of time? I'd consider myself a beginner when it comes to the computer.

Mahalo for sharing!

Ryan, you did an AWESOME job! I couldn't have said it better myself. :) Sometimes, it's nice to be blissfully anonymous, though. I was getting a little nervous after Kirk Matthews contacted me and mentioned that he may be featuring my site alongside HawaiiStories... I decided to try doing a quick redesign before the story broke, only to find that my site didn't make it into the final cut. But hey, it gave me incentive to start giving my site a facelift, and that's what matters, right?

Great job! Ryan, you da man!

Ryan is becoming quite a media celebrity for someone who doesn't like being photographed. I make it a practice to keep away from being in front of any camera as much as possible.

Ryan was also featured this week in an article on Geocaching in the Honolulu Advertiser.

Ryan, Great job! Thanks for sharing the segment, especially for the locals on the Mainland like myself who do get to see the actual Hawaii news. You didn't seem nervous at all and I think you did an awesome job explaining the whole thing. I thought it was funny that Leslie Wilcox made "blogging" sound like it was an almost inappropriate word though I think she and her co-anchor wanted to have some friendly and casual banter between the two since it was a feature piece. Thanks for providing this space for us and for lending us your talents in making this a successful forum.

I prefer the term "media whore," thank you.

Seriously, though, I'm not a fan of photography, and duck regularly (in part out of a misguided sense of professional courtesy). I will, however, shamelessly plug the things I'm passionate about to anyone who'll listen.

The Advertiser piece on geocaching cleverly skirted my grumblings about not having my face in the paper by using only the side of my humongous head. Ai!

Ryan, that is your voice.

Good god, it's like a cartoon character. Why didn't anyone tell me?

I have yet to meet anyone who actually liked the sound of his/her own voice on tape, Ryan; don't feel alone.

Ryan -
As one of your postes said, "you da man!" Thanks again for helping us out on such short notice. Though TV is just a passing fad, I'm hoping it will last long enough for me to begin drawing social security - - if there is any money left. I was reading some of the comments and it sounds as though there may be a few new bloggers in the making. Thanks much, Ryan...
Your friend,
Kirk

Finally got my speakers unhooked from the old system and re-hooked to the new one so I could hear the story. That really is your voice, buddy. ;)

Kirk, if you reappear, see the "vacancy" sign over there on the left? Grins...
