Hot Dogs!!!

Since the 4th of July holiday is coming up, it seems (to me at least) that the hot dog is just as traditional to the holiday as Thanksgiving is to turkey.

So does anyone have a favorite place for hot dogs?

For me, it would be Costco, a pretty good price, $1.50 which includes a cup of soda, a decent selection of extra items, and 2 choices of mustard. The drawback is the un-availablity of cheese (and I guess chilli).

7-11 comes in second. Higher prices but more selection of extra items and of course cheese and chilli is available. Soda is extra cost but what the heck you can always add manapua and spam musubi to the meal.

Hey! Costco's dogs are pretty good, and cheap, too!

Now if they only sold cold beer with them...

=)

Gotta add my vote for CostCo too. Can't beat the price, and those aren't skimpy dogs, either. The fact that they put onions and sauerkraut out is a major plus.

I've eaten a few fancy dogs from Orange Julius, and there's Hot Dog on a Stick (which I patronized a few times only because I felt bad for the employees, who had to wear the most ridiculous uniforms).

Another question - when you're making your own dogs, what's your preferred way to cook 'em? My parents were big boilers, and as a latchkey kid I used to score 'em and fry 'em in a pan with shoyu (I know, I know). I'm sure I'd like grilling 'em in a BBQ best, but that's not practical... as our last collective attempt at the HawaiiStories Hui proved!

Yep, Costco doggies. I was skeptical at first, but deng, those things were good.

There's a restaurant called Whillougby's (spelling?) in the Airport Hotel (I think it was), that's kind of pricey but their chili dog is HUGE (and quite tasty).

Haven't had dogs on the grill in a while, but stove-top does just as well. And if I'm super lazy (default setting), I go for the micro zapping.

Well, I still pine for the hole-in-the-wall on Fort Street where you could buy Woody's Hot Dogs; judging from the website, it's expanded a lot, but it seems to be carts only now, and I can only think of two locations I've seen. One's at the new Navy Exchange Pearl Harbor (second floor atrium) and the other is out at Waikele in front of Loew's. Sigh.

If you haven't had one of those Chicago-style dogs they sell in front of each of the Home Depots in Hawaii, and you really like hot dogs, you should try them out. They'll cost you a bit, but they're VERY good.

There was a guy who used to grill 'em in front of CompUSA, and the dogs would give that rewarding little SNAP when you bit into 'em. There was a guy down by the Kamehameha statue who did them the same way. Yum.

Yep. Nothing beats grilling 'em. Gonna be doing that tonight.

I'm more of boiling the hot dogs in water type of person but I have seen hot dogs boiled in beer (or a mixture of water and beer) that expands the hot dog.

mmm Costco hot dogs w/ saurkraut. I believe they use Hebrew National brand.

I broil, boil, nuke, pan fry...

.. my personal favorite is to simmer some Polska Kielbasa on a bed of Saurkraut.
(Guess whats for dinner, Hon?)

YOu all suck...costco hotdogs? Ahhh, f-ing gross. Being from Chi-town I've eaten my fair share of dogs and know how they're prepared back home. First of all they have to be boiled...this grilling method should be reserved for cubscouts only. Second, the kind of dog you get is critical...the only store available brands I've found that stand up to chicago hot dog joints are Vienna (THE standard) and Hebrew National Kosher Beef Franks. Accept no substitutes people, these are the best.

Does anyone remember a sidewalk cafe type place in Waikiki that featured hotdogs boiled in beer.
You could sit and eat them, drink beer and watch the tourists wander by.
It must have been in the late '60s or early '70s.
Ah, the memories.

Costco? Are you freakin' kidding me? Hands down, the best hot dogs I've ever had are from Oregon's own Wicked Weenie Hot Dog Co. They're the micro-brewery of hot dogs with everything from double smoked sausages to tillamook cheddar dogs. I can't stand it .. I'm going to get one right now.

I will be visiting Kauai at the end of the month and I heard about a great hot dog place in Poipu that serves hot dogs with a variety of different, unconventional (at least to a Chicagoian) toppings. Someone please tell me the name :)

My friend opened up a Nathan's hot dog stand like the ones in New York City. They're huge and are all beef. He says it's a hog of a dog. Great guy and even better hot dogs!

I understand Hot Dog Annie's burned down a long time ago. I used to frequent it in the late 60s. She was wild, a New Yorker, had a filthy mouth. A poster of Don Ho on the wall inside, putting on his underwear and shooting the finger. I would go by there after hitting the bars on Waikiki to have a hot pastrami and coffee before driving home to Wahiawa.
