JournalCon 2003- Hawaii will be represented!

Aloha everybody. Well, I did it. I bought a ticket, booked a room, and registered for JournalCon 2003. I've always wanted to go to Texas, especially after studing the geneaology of the Dalton's (my maiden name), and discovering that most of my daddy's people settled there after their migration from Ireland.

Is anybody else going?

Details here: www.WebWritersWeekend.com

I know that this topic was brought up back in May by Nemesis Vex, but I feared that simply posting a comment to that old post wouldn't spread the word that Hawaii will be represented at this year's conference.

It looks like it's going to be a lot of fun, and attendence is already at around 75 people! Have you ever been to a JournalCon before? Does anybody have any interest in going? Why or why not?

Oh, and our friend Bill from California is in town this weekend. We're meeting up for brunch tomorrow. Anybody want to join us?

Ever been to one? I helped plan the first one! It was in Pittsburgh. I had a blast, despite never really getting to experience it as a guest — I was busy running myself ragged making sure rooms were set up and delegates weren't getting lost.

I really want to go to this one, since it's in Austin, and Greg is too. The planners are among the coolest folk around, to boot. It's just a matter of (1.) getting the money, and (2.) getting the time off from my new job - which, as you can imagine, will be a challenge.

If I do go, Beth, can I hang around with you (and Baz?) and pretend to be almost as cool?

Ryan, of course! Although I have no clue if Baz is coming to Austin. Somehow I can't see him in a room of journalers. Hell, I can't even imagine him sitting down and listening to somebody read an entry. Remember that old SNL character that Mike Myers used to play: the hyper hypo...that's Baz.

I know. I'm not sure if I can get the time off from work as paid vacation, but what the heck! And I chi chinged it right onto my credit card. Go to Austin now, pay for it for the next year. That's my motto!

Even if you can't go, maybe we should make a cardboard cut out of you, and I can drag you around all weekend...

Unless you work for some real slave drivers, Ryan, I imagine you should be able to use any vacation time you've accrued, considering August will mark your six month anniversary with the new job. (I checked your archives -- you started in February.)

If you ask your bosses now, I'm sure you can swing it.

I'm taking off Thursday the 16th, Friday the 17th, and Monday the 20th, if I can. Otherwise I'll just take off Thursday and Friday. I figure the place won't fall apart if I'm gone for two days....

For me it was more an issue of $$$. I can totally understand not being able to go financially. My ticket cost almost $500! That's almost $100/day right there. Not to mention hotel and food. Thank God for Mastercard.

Okay. To recap: Greg + Beth + Austin = A pretty compelling hootenanny. Hmm...

Yup. And you all get to hear me read an entry about sex.

Oh dear. Only a few more days left till the big event arrives. I can't believe I've actually been roped into two panels and a reading. Unfortunately, one of my panels happens at the same time as Ryan's. Ah well -- there's always a shopping excursion to Waterloo Records ...

NemesisVex,

Will you be going to the Austin Journalers event on Thursday? I'll be in town, and might just mosey on over there.

I'll wear a lei so you know it's me.

Yup. I'm planning on being there, probably around 7:30 p.m. or so. Most folks are usually fashionably late to the happy hour. Little City is actually a coffeehouse, but that'll be the starting point -- at some point, I imagine folks will want to explore downtown as the night goes on.

If you're staying at the Omni, Little City is two blocks west to Congress and one block north between 9th and 10th Streets (closer to 10th St).
