Belated 50th Birthday Party

Like Like Drive Inn. I think I've eaten there more than anywhere else in town, except for the mainline (mainland) fastfood franchises. Had a 4th of July lunch there with Helen this year, and I think I wondered then how long the place has been around. Long time, more than most of you folks have been.

My favorite meal there is the hot roast beef sandwich, mashed potatoes and gravy ... yummm. They do a very decent grilled cheese sandwich, too. And the iced tea (infinite refills) is also most excellent.

Ah, Happy Birthday indeed! I was thinking of linking this too, in a "good things that aren't gone" thread. I remember feeling a bit weird after the renovation/flipflop... but now I can't even remember what it used to look like. Even in its "new" digs, it carries the character and flavor of an old-time diner.

It's good to read that in this particular case, the family has stuck around to keep it running. It's interesting to see, when classic establishments disappear, how often it's because of poor business, and how often it's because the longtime owners just couldn't see handing it off to anyone else.

Like Like Drive-Inn is right down the street from where we live... it's a shame we don't go there more often!

Ryan don't feel too bad, I live on the same block as Like Like Drive Inn and it seems the only time I go there is because someone else wants to go.

Don't get me wrong, the food and service are okay and the price is reasonable but I am more of a take out kind of person.

Still it's an okay place to have a meal with a small group of people.

I never went back after the renovation and after they changed their saimin (it used to be the best, IMHO). The old LL had lots of plants and small jukeboxes at the table.

First time I ever went to an L&L was while working in Mililani about seven years ago; it was a little hole-in-the-wall at one of the shopping centers up there. I don't recall being very adventurous about the food; had I known about its growing reputation I think I'd have tried it more often.

Yeah I used to live right next to Like Like on Kanunu Street and to this day I still get the same thing. The portuguese sausage omlet with green onions and cheese. God bless that place.

Linkmeister: we're talking about Like Like Drive In, not L&L Drive-Inn (which was started in 1976 by Eddie Flores).

Oops.

Just went there today for lunch - met up with our very own Bill!

I don't know if it's always that busy or if the anniversary coverage has given them a boost - there was a line to the door the entire time we were there. Not bad for a business that only takes cash. (Grumble grumble.)

Got a free Coke, too. Some kind of Coke promotion. (Though the server was nice enough to say it was actually because she thought I was cute.)

Glad they're still around!

Hey, someone should start a new topic about what the best 24hr/late night eateries are on Oahu. Like Like is definitely one because it's:
1) Open 24/7
2) Centrally Located
3) Serves breakfast ALL the time

Yeah, had a great time there with Ryan yesterday. Had Albert's hot roast beef sandwich. I ordered a diet coke, so my drink wasn't free. Or maybe I'm just not as cute as Ryan.

The line was *crazy*: I saw several people leave as soon as they saw the length. "Why should I wait in line for lunch?"

The little old man in front of me was telling his companions that it was this crowded because of the restaurant's 150th anniversary.

His Friend: Don't you mean 50th anniversary?
Little Old Man: No, no. 150th.
His Friends: Wow, that's a long time.
Me (secretly): No kidding.

Happy 50th! That is quite a milestone and great accomplishment. Roast beef and mashed potatos is a great way to celebrate a birthday.
