The Fall 2003 TV Season

Any comments about this season TV shows either new or old, broadcast or cable?

Ryan asked me to post something on the newly released Hawaiistories.com to see if we can post new stuff to it. So far it seems to be okay.

In any event while I had a list of shows that I'm watching this fall my biggest gripe is the fact that KGMB is now showing Enterprise at 11:30 pm instead of 10:30 pm. And KHON is now showing Stargate SG-1 at 11:30 pm instead of 12:30 am. Both sci-fi shows showing at the same time. *sigh*!

Hmm. Both KGMB and KHON after that lucrative sci-fi geek market? Interesting move. I don't follow Stargate, and TiVo "Enterprise," so broadcast times aren't a problem for me.

A lot of folks I know are following the latest season "Survivor," which for that series I guess is turning out to be a pretty good one, but I've never gotten sucked into that franchise.

As much as I love "CSI" and "CSI: Miami," I won't be watching "Navy CSIS" - too many bad memories of being forced to watch "J.A.G." with my grandmother. (With "Cold Case" and "Without a Trace," the crime/forensic genre is starting to rival "Law & Order" in the spinoff department!)

We are enjoying "The Handler," starring Joe Pantoliano and a pretty good supporting cast.

I enjoyed the original BBC "Coupling," but I'm afraid of what NBC's "Coupling" will turn out to be like.

Gosh, what is new out there? Half of them will be gone in two months, anyway. Um... "Whoopi," "The O.C.," "Miss Match," "Joan of Arcadia," "Jake 2.0" - anyone got a TV Guide handy?

I enjoy CSI. Don't know why, but I'm not into CSI: Miami. Without A Trace and Law & Order: SVU are pretty good too, but the shows that've been sparking my interests as of late are Hagure Keiji and Kinpachi Sensei.

I believe all the episodes are re-runs, but still, they're new to me and I like them.

I have been watching Joan of Arcadia, and it is very, very good. The story is well-set-up and the acting quite good, particularly from Amber Tamblyn (formerly of General Hospital), who plays Joan, and from Joe Mantegna, but that should surprise nobody, I suppose.

Until the premiere episode this season, I'd never seen Survivor, but a friend asked me to tape it for him, and I was hooked immediately. It wasn't at all what I expected. Yes, there was the annoying bickering and scheming, but mostly the contestants were fairly likable, and the challenges were interesting. I have continued to watch, and it's been a nice way to spend an hour on Thursdays.

The show I'm really looking forward to, after the World Series is over, is Arrested Development, the new show with Jason Bateman and Portia deRossi. The critics seem to love it, but nobody is predicting its success. That's a double recommendation, I think!

Mmm! Portia deRossi! And I love "The O.C."! So bad, its go-o-o-o-o-ood!

I wasn't planning on watching The Handler last night but towards the end it got interesting. Was expecting that the two bad guys would give up breaking in the vault and go legit in running that bookstore that caters to rare books.

I have to second that vote for Joan of Arcadia. It's kind of like an updated version of Touched by an Angel aimed more at the Gen X crowd.

The only other new show I tried was Karen Sisko, which I think will be gone in a few weeks. Not a very good crime show IMO.

I'll just stick with my old standbys of Fox News, ABC's The Practice, NBC's American Dreams, and my collection of Babylon 5 DVDs and tapes.

I just love "Joan of Arcadia"! The stories are great, and Amber Tamblyn is superb.

My other favorites:
Judging Amy
CSI
Survivor
Alias
The Practice
Law and Order

I've heard that "Cold Case" is really good, but I haven't seen it yet. Since I like to watch ER, I'll pick up "Without a Trace" when the reruns start.
