November's Eve

Friday brings Halloween — or All Hallows Eve, or Samhain, or whatever your flavor — a day that's blamed for everything from spiritual unrest to accelerated tooth decay. So what do you, your family, or your coworkers have planned for this last day of October?

Costumes are fine at my office, but masks are not. I don't plan on dressing up, though... unless I could sell my boss on the "shiftless slacker" thing so I could actually dress down.

With wee ones in the household, as has become tradition, we'll be driving out to Mililani to do the door-to-door thing. (We might even check out this renown cul-de-sac.) My daughter will be Belle from "Beauty and the Beast" (her choice, not mine!) and my son will be... well, something small and cute.

Got candy? Got pumpkin? Got plans?

Aside from eating a little bit more candy, Halloween is just another day for me.

Are you kidding? I have a kid! As a kid, Halloween was THE favorite "holiday" of the year.

Christmas came, eventually, but usually all kinds of conditions were attatched to the "Wonder of Christmas" in the weeks leading up to toyfest. "Be good." "Clean your room or Santa won't come!" "You better watch out!" "He's checking his list!" -- oh bother.

Halloween was taken much less seriously by adult-folk and kids were allowed to have an unfettered great time.

My aim is to have my kid enjoy like crazy, especially since it's on a Friday this year and he doesn't have to get up early the next morning for school.

I will accompany him around the neighborhood as far and as wide as his skinny legs will carry him. And when we get home, I will check all booty for integrity so that he does not have to concern himself with the "real" world, if at least for a little while more.

Call me a sap, but unless you're a daddy, you can't know: Nothing makes me happier than a happy kiddo.

Okay, glad someone brought this up, because I need a HALLOWEEN COSTUME IDEA!!!
Here are the parameters:

1) Nothing that's gonna make me hot. Like suits or sweaters or polyester jackets. Longsleeves are out.
2) Make-up bad, beards and wigs okay. I find that make-up melts and gets into my beer.
3) Something current. During the election year some friends of mine went as Lingle and Cayetano and they were holding hands at Resturant Row. That was pretty hilarious.

So what, any ideas?

My 3 year old grand daughter freaked out when I loaded Halloween candies into the grocery cart. She cried and pleaded for me to take it out simply because it was for Halloween. She's already told us she's not going trick or treating because she's afraid. So we'll just be passing out candies to the little ghoulies who knock on our door. I hope this is only a phase for her that she'll outgrow by next year.

ZZ - Just wait til you have grandchildren, they'll make you even happier!

Sin - I've always admired the Medieval costume designs, perhaps a Tavern Wench since you brought up beer?

Errr, of course the Tavern Wench would work if you're female .. *L*

Posted by Sin on October 28, 2003 7:29 PM:

I am male but even so the tavern wench thing might be funny. Hmmmm...anything else? A friend suggested buying a cheap black coat and pants and tie at Savers and then getting a Lone Ranger mask from somewhere along with a plastic samurai sword then i could be one the assasins from the new Tarintino movie. Sounds like a last resort if i can't think of anything better.

I'm certain Kill Bill will be thoroughly looted this Friday. I was thinking costumes when I was actually watching the movie the second time. Surplus girls' school costume? Go Go Yubari! Big white bathrobe and a samurai sword? O-Ren Ishii!

Old farts like me stay home and watch old horror movies on TNT and AMC.

In my early years here I used to go watch the promenade in Waikiki but have long since given that up. Halloween is for little kids and clubbers, and I don't fit into either class, so I more or less ignore it.

Who is this silly "Petter hegre" who seems to be spamming here?

Comment spammers are practically an epidemic among blogs. I just had to clear Petter's last run through this site, two dozen posts in all.

There are tools out there that I'm planning to implement (MT-Blacklist seems the most promising)... as soon as everyone else has suffered the slings and arrows of real-world testing.

I usually don't get sick until just after Halloween but I've got a cold so I'm guessing that Tom will take the kids solo this year. I used to work at an office where we had a costume, office decorating, and dessert contest during lunch. It's one of the few times that the adults get to be all silly, too.

Off topic: Ryan, MT Blacklist is great! I'm even considering enabling HTML comments again.

On Topic: We just got our pumpkin last night, and my wife and daughter carved it already. Tonight or tomorrow, we really need to find a costume for my son. He's 18 months old, so options are limited. Perhaps I'll just wrap him up in a blanket and say he's a worm?

Off Topic: Ali, you're right, that MT-Blacklist is one sharp piece of coding. In fact, it's running on HawaiiStories (and all its MT-powered blogs) right now. I'm actually a bit frightened by how easy it was to get working.

Hey Ryan,

When Alex was 18 months, I dressed him up in a tiny cow outfit. I dressed myself as a farmer with overalls and straw hat and paraded him up and down the street!

Neighbors still remember my kid! "Hey, isn't tha the cow?"

=)

That's the kind of thing makes me understand why Jean puts up with you. :)

MT Blacklist has worked very well for me (so far); I haven't yet tried the "De-Spam" option to delete the 20 or so old ones I have floating around, but it's knocked a dozen or so attempts right off the channel for me so far (knock wood).

Oh, and zztype, tell me anudder!

They've been pretty conservative at UH-Manoa in recent years, but Halloween 2003 seems to have inspired them.

Never seen so many "ladies" with hairy legs on campus before.

Still haven't seen a Terminator mask, though.
