Cheese

A young tourist, whose blog I read every day, asked me: "Do you know of place I can go to get some tastygood cheese? I'm lactose intolerant and have to avoid cow milk but can eat goat and sheep aplenty. At the food pantry even the cheeses that are regularly sheep were cow. Cut to picture of me crying in the grocery store."

We can't have tourists weeping in supermarkets. Has anyone a suggestion?

I would've suggested R. Field (in Foodland Beretania store) or C&C Pasta in Kaimuki.

Hmm. Well, turns out Hawaii has at least one goat cheese producer, though the Star-Bulletin piece notes there aren't any retail outlets on O`ahu. This write up in the Advertiser from 1999, meanwhile, says a lot about cheese, but nothing about where to get it.

The quick-and-dirty answer might be the R. Field Wine Company corner of some Foodland supermarkets.

Is that gourmet food store still there at the Dole Cannery? I forgot the name of it... but it's really good!

Oh shoot, I just googled it... it was the Strawberry Connection, and they apparently closed.

Man the Strawberry Connection was like a hidden treasure in Kalihi Kai.

However, I never sampled the goat cheese there. Is it good? I know goat's milk is supposed to be healthier for you than cow's milk but I'm not sure why or how much healthier. Anyone? Anyone?

R. Field has some lovely Mozarella di Bufala, if your friend is looking for something non-cow. It's really, really good.

I live in Europe and visited Hawaii about a year ago. I was shocked to see how expensive the chËvres and mozarella di bufala, but I was able to find some at a market called Foodland. I think there is many Foodland in Hawaii.

I checked Ala Moana Foodland and found three options for goat cheese. JJ got it right ... $6.22 for five ounces! Yikes.

Goat milk is naturally lower in fat. I believe the problem with cow milk is that it is designed to be digested by more then one stomach. Found the goat cheese at ala moana and took a pass! Was actually hoping to find some stinky roquefort to enjoy on the beach.
