The "New" Magnum P.I. & Hawaii 5.0

Is it just me or do other people find it offensive that George Clooney may become the "new" Thomas Magnum or at least his younger brother? Or how about Mel Gibson as the "new" Steve McGarrett? In today's Star Bulletin online, the Reel News column dishes the Hollywood gossip on these roles.

As for myself, I grew up partially with Hawaii 5.0 and wholly with Magnum P.I. I loved these shows because they took place in Hawaii. I think people generally have an affection for television shows (especially good ones) that feature their hometown or state. To mess with these shows by making them into movies with a new generation of actors is to mess with my childhood. I may take a peek at these movies if, and when, they come out. But in my eyes, Tom Selleck and Jack Lord will always be Magnum P.I. and Steve McGarrett respectively and respectfully.

I once read an anecdote about Raymond Chandler, author of The Big Sleep and other crime noir novels. People would say: "Raymond, don't you feel devastated by how Hollywood has destroyed your books?" And he would take them into his study, point to the bookshelf and say, "There they are. Look, they're fine."

The fact that somebody is doing a remake of Magnum doesn't alter in any way Tom Selleck's performance in the role.

I imagine they're right that Clooney is a much more 'bankable' star than the somewhat matured Selleck. But if they think sidestepping backstory by pulling the — or rather, I guess, a character out of Hawai`i and making only passing reference to Magnum will work, I think they're wrong.

Without Magnum, and without Hawaii, it's just another cop movie. In which case, why invoke "Magnum P.I." at all? Just call it "Clooney P.I." or something.

Don't need Clooney to play Magnum, maybe Higgins or some other support type of role. Not that Clooney is bad or anything like that but at the end of the Magnum P.I. series there was Thomas Magnum and his daughter. Make the daughter character the lead role in this new series. This way Tom Selleck can at least guest star on some episodes and showing the daughter ropes of being a private detective.

Helen, you must read Clive Cussler. Dirk Pitt's latest adventure has his two children working with him; these two appeared on his doorstep in the last book. He'd thought the mother died.

George Clooney????? I'll admit that Goerge is a good actor. But he is no Tom Selleck and he is surley not a Thomas Magnum. Hollywood is no different form the NFL or anywhere else in corporate America. Its all about $$$$.
Tom Selleck has that "Hysterical Laugh" us islanders have come to love. He also has the ability to show a Hero/Tough Guys side. I don't think there is an actor out there that can ever duplicate that. I won't waste a penny to go see a Magnum Movie without Tom Selleck and the original cast. Sorry George, you should stick to Oceans 11.

Why in fact are they even considering someone other that Tom Selleck for the part of Magnum? He may be seasoned but tell me he still doesn't look and act great.. not to mention would bowl everyone over once again? You're right George should stick to Oceans 11

I think that Tom Selleck is still as Sexy as ever!..and Still in his prime aswell as being an excellent actor.. Bring Back Tom I Say!
He'll Fit back into the roll like a pair of slippers..
As for GeorgeCloony xcelnt Actor, nice lookn guy..But sadly not a good replacement for Tom..

There is only one James Bond, and we all know who that is and there is only one Thomas Sullivan Magnum. If they can't make the new one with Tom Selleck, then don't make it at all. They should use the same cast and make them all older. That is the only way it would be acceptable to fans whose favorite television show is Magnum P.I.

I heard that tom selleck is cosidering taking the original magnum position back, at least he's been offered it!!! Let's hope for the best.

Hey, get real. If it ain't Tom Selleck, it ain't Magnum, PI -- and a huge percentage of the potential audience will boycott it, including myself.

Personally, I like George Clooney -- but he ain't no Tom Selleck!

(Maybe I'm just biased, as an older woman once told me, nearly 20 years ago, that I looked like Tom Selleck. Still, Tom Sellect *HAS* to be Magnum or it won't fly!)

man, they're going to fu(k this one up just like starsky and hutch aren't they. Magnum P.I. was no joke. Clooney and LL are.

Thomas Sullivan Magnun, Orville Wright, Theodore Calvin, Johnathan Quayle Higgins, Zeus, Appollo,Robins'Nest, Agatha, Carol, and all the ones that came and left. This show wouldn' t have worked any other way. They were magical! I never get enough of those 4 men. I never will. One of my all time favorite tv series. I wish they would do a 2 hour reunion special or maybe a 3 part series showing 2 hours at a time and wail until the next week in same time slot. That would be so wonderful!!! I want to know what is going on in their lives. Thomas and Michelle and Lilly, Rick and his wife,T.C., Higgie baby! If you are reading this, you know I am right. We need closure and I am ready to watch. I'll even help write it if no one will listen to me. Now I am all psyched out. I have to start writing. So long and take care everyone! Peace and love and hope and faith. If you have one of these, you are truly blessed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rose

Im an ozzie and loved Magnum PI, The thing that still bothers me about Clooney playing the role is why? Selleck is still young enough to play the role as are the rest of the cast, Higgens mybe pushing 75 but he never had an energetic role! Ford looks at doing another Raiders movie and he must be over 65 by now. Sellects younger than that and still dose't look his age. There are so many MPI fans worldwide. Startski and Hutch made the big screen and that series last 2-3 yrs, MPI went for 8-9 yrs Imagine Selleck making the new PI movie...Wow It would be HUGE!!! It would be like Seinfield comming back!
Go Guys!

I loved Magnum PI. I watch the re-runs now whenever I can. I would definitely watch the new episodes. Besides, Magnum will always be hot!!! George Clooney just doesn't have what Tom Selleck has. Go for it guys!!!

I agree. Without Tom Selleck, there is NO Magnum P.I. Tom is the only Magnum, as far as I'm concerned.

To me, the bigger question is, why do they keep having to re-do things? Why do we need a "2" or a "II" of anything? Are the writers so lacking in imagination that all they can do is to write either remakes or second versions? Why not leave the classics alone? Can you just imagine a "Gone with the Wind 2", or "War and Peace 2", or ??? Why not use their fertile (?) minds to come up with completely different movies/TV series/books instead of trying to make a quick buck on remakes?

Okay pau. I go wipe da froth off my mouth now... LOL!

Hi,
I'm Fanna Mae King Wiesenthal, and the "woman" to the "younger" brother of Vietnam Veteran Thomas Sullivan Magnum. "Curlly" and I haven't seen each other for 22 years. He, too, is MILITARY! and an investigator.
This story is even more interesting because I was the only person that Bob and Christine Masters (both deceased) thought of as a daughter. By the way, I like Golden Retrievers and Chocolate Labradors and Mutt Labradors over the two dogs, Apollo and Zeus, who chase the Magnum elder around. I believe that I have inherited the estate, and the younger Magnum and I will be there. I might arrive first, we'll see.
In doing the research on the Magnum role, I have discovered that many were given that name militarily, only to be unable to sustain the security clearance of the name. "Curly" has an archival right to be known as the name legally, and nobody can touch his security clearance except for me. That does NOT preclude loved ones from finding us. Sadly, we're often separated from family when we have a security clearance like this -- my children have PARITY!, i.e., if I explain something to them, they would understand. Also, I have a unique ability to protect them from harm. Often, our families are harmed as they seek the clearance. No more Justice Department.
You can post as friends at my journal address:
fanna_sundance at Live Journal.com. I was also known as WriterWrks@aol from 95 to 97 (and possibly now?). I was illegally adopted under the name "Nancy Willett Niedenthal"; later married and divorced (Biblical) "Nancy Willett Axberg"; and wrote under the name "Nancy Willett," a holocaust archival. I have emerged after years of people mistaking my identity. Yes, the former athlete (an athlete still) who was mysteriously presumed to be bi-polar, Type II diabetes, etc., etc., when all I ever needed was Lorazepam as an intermittent medication/preventative for my fired up athletic adrenalin.
As to who should play my "Curly," Gibson is a good choice -- which one? -- but so is Clooney -- which one? The military one? Curly's friend?
We'll see the children in Oahu. Basically, I have a set up here in Ann Arbor, MI to pull them through safely now.
For Now,
Fanna

Hopefully the new Thomas Magnum will have at least a great looking stash like Tom's.
If not, I'm not watching it.

Clooney as Magnum?
WHY ?????
I'dont understand!!!
I like him (J.C),but Magnum would be just Tom Selleck.

In hungarian:

Clooney mint Magnum?
Miért ?????
Ezt nem értem!!!
Szeretem Clooneyt, de Magnumot csak Tom Selleck játszhatja.

Magnum PI is my all time greatest TV Series. Thomas Magnum, Higgins, TC, Rick and the rest live vividly in my mind. They are as real to me as any real people we know. Robin's Nest, the guest house, TC's Chopper, the Ferrari, the beach are all part of a great Oahu phenomenon. Nothing can change that.It will be a very rude intrusion for anyone to attemtpt to reproduce that nostalgia. Sacrilegious in fact.

Posted by Don Cestone on May 28, 2006 2:23 PM:

There is only one MAGNUM PI and that is Tom Selleck. If they make this movie with anyone else it will be what Tom Cruise did with Mission Impossible, use the name and music and nothing else
