50 First Dates

Blaine's post on Iz reminded me of another piece of news. The unstoppable "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is featured prominently in the upcoming film "50 First Dates," starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. But the film itself offers locals and locals-at-heart more than a great soundtrack: "50 First Dates" was filmed in several island locations.

Heck, just watch the trailer (or grab a copy courtesy Apple). See the gorgeous Ko`olau Mountains! See the mostly loud Aloha wear! See Adam wearing a "Matsumoto's" shave ice T-shirt!

It looks like, plot wise, much of the story takes place in Hawaii. But, perhaps in part because we don't really have a worthy marine science/waterpark facility (where Adam's character apparently works), sites in California and elsewhere fill in. It'll be interesting, as with all "Hawaii films," to see what's really Hawai`i and what's just imaginary.

Still, Adam clearly loves Hawai`i and its real personality and charm (remember "Punch Drunk Love"?), so I'm looking forward to this one. Looks like "Memento: The Romantic Comedy Edition."

Anyone know more about this movie? I barely remember hearing anything about filming (compared to the buzz surrounding "Tears of the Sun").

I saw some previews of this movie and while I usually hate how mainlanders portray Hawaii locals, Rob Schnider's version of us looks like it's hilarious. He doesn't quite have the pidgen accent down but it's way freaking better than the "Eh brah, you took his wallet, you beat 'em up" monologue from that movie "North Shore". I think I'll check out this movie just for his performance.

Wonder of wonders, Jen and I got out to see this yesterday (our Valentine's Day gift from my mom). Rob Schneider's performance is definitely the low point of the film, but it (a.) doesn't suck as bad as it could, and (b.) is really the only thing worth complaining about.

I enjoyed the film much more than I expected to. It really was a good date movie, a good mix of low-brow humor and genuine heartfelt romance.

As for Rob? He's half Filipino, actually, so he can probably get away with a little more than your average actor playing an islander. "You haole! Why you make my sister clean your hotel room?" Bad, but funny.

And the Star-Bulletin has a starring role (and there's a cameo by the Honolulu Weekly), too.

I saw the film yesterday as well and really liked it. The base humor was a little base, but my wife and I liked the way it wasn't handled too predictably throughout.

It's interesting to hear the local take on Rob Schneider's performance.

The whole beating scene dialogue - "you eat all our pineapple, you make my sister clean your hotel room..." while super funny gave made me a little uneasy about the vacation we've been looking into. Seriously. I know it's just a dumb movie, but as a "mainlander" I'd rather not try to relax somewhere I'm disliked.

I lived in Minnesota when "Fargo" came out and remember all the locals saying "we doughn't tak like dat"... Ya, sure, ya betcha. ;) Funny thing about satire, it's funny because of the slightest thread of truth.

So how about my family vacation? If my family and I are well behaved, are we welcome to some pineapple and beach?

Regards,

Deanpaul

I believe it was Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

Deanpaul, you'll be fine. Tourists of any color that come with a chip on their shoulder, are rude, or have some sense of entitlement will probably not be warmly received... but overall, we love visitors. Heck, we need 'em. I hope your family has a great time here. Mine does!

Michael, the artist would be Israel "Iz" Kamakawiwoole... as mentioned in the very first sentence in this thread.

Thanks Ryan!

It got quiet in here for a couple of days. ;)

I agree with what your post, we're mild mannered tourists vs. spring break partiers. We're into the family on the beach vacation as opposed to the "family trying to cram every activity available" vacation. we've got two little kids, age 3 1/2 and 15 months, so mild can be wild as far as waves are concerned.

Any advice on places to stay on or near the beach, and beaches that would be good for kids.

Thanks,

Deanpaul

Deanpaul, if you've got little kids, if you're on the island of O'ahu, I'd say Kailua Beach is your best bet. Fine white sand, small waves, and a great view. Enjoy!
