Hawaii's Best: Food

Here's part two (of six) of the Star-Bulletin's Readers' Poll. I'll post the remaining sections over the next few days. This is a long one, so just do the best you can.

best Hawaiian food:
I don't know if it's the best, but I really like the Aiea Taro Patch in the Aiea Shopping Center, even though you have to eat in a parking garage.

best plate lunch:
Okay, there's just no contest. If you haven't eaten at KJ's Local Grinds in the Windward City Shopping Center, you gotta check it out. Everything is well-made and the portions are more than generous (when you order the fried chicken plate, you get three crispy thighs on your plate and then another three in a separate aluminum-foil wrap, and it costs less than six bucks). The specials are always great, but make sure someone in your party tries the furikake chicken.

best Sushi:
I'm not a seafood eater, so I'm going with Aloha Sushi, because of its ubiquitousness and yummy California rolls.

best Italian food:
I won't be surprised if Assaggio's wins here, because it's the place everyone talks about ('though what the heck? Bravo keeps winning the Honolulu Weekly poll!), but I'll bet you haven't eaten at Cafe Sistina on King Street. You must.

best steakhouse:
It's been years since I've eaten there, but Hy's Steakhouse in Waikiki is still my favorite. Live music by Audy Kimura is gravy. Save room for cherries jubilee, prepared at your table.

best bakery:
I'm more into bread than pastry, so my vote goes to Fritz Bakery on Dillingham. Yum!

best ice cream:
I have a feeling there'll be a huge wave of Cold Stone voters, but on strength of ice cream alone, I have to go with Bubbies. A scoop of coffee with a scoop of cookies 'n cream will cure what ails 'ya, unless what ails 'ya is clogged arteries, I guess. Yum again!

Burgers:
I'm still a Kua Aina fan, so that gets my vote, but Eddie's Burgers and Frozen Custard is coming on strong.

Malasada:
I often am in need of a large quantity of malasadas at strange hours, and Kamehameha Bakery on School Street never lets me down. It opens at, like, two a.m. and the malasadas are good and cheap (thirty-five cents apiece, I think).

Okazuya:
Just down the road from Kamehameha Bakery is Mitsu-Ken. If you haven't been there, you have at least heard of it. In addition to great plate lunches, the okazuya stuff is very good. Whatever you get, make sure you also get a yakitori chicken stick to go with it.

best oxtail soup:
I suspect this category was created just because someone likes Kapiolani Bakery in Waimalu and at Kamehameha Bowl. It's about nine bucks now, so no longer something you might have every weekend, but still yummy on cold, wet days.

best Japanese food:
it's been a long time since I've had upscale Japanese food, but I had Benihana last September and it was excellent.

best buffet:
I don't like buffets, but my family goes to the Ihilani a few times a year, and it's always wonderful.

best shave ice:
ice garden in the Aiea Shopping Center. Think Waiola, but better.

best family dining:
my family, including two elementary-school-aged kids, goes to Gyo-taku in Aiea all the time. Good food and very family-friendly.

best fresh fish:
I don't eat fish.

best Sunday brunch:
again, the buffet at the Ihilani.

best manapua:
Chun Wah Kam. I'm no purist: I like the huge variety.

best lunch wagon:
that lunch wagon in the spot where Grace's was in the seventies, in front of the Canterbury house near the University.

best fast food:
McDonald's still rules.

best happy hour:
?

best vegetarian restaurant:
it's not a vegetarian restaurant, but the vegetarian stuff at I Love Country Cafe is good.

best business lunch:
unfortunately, I have one of those jobs that doesn't allow for a business lunch. what makes a place good for a business lunch, anyway?

best dessert:
tiramisu at Mediterraneo.

best romantic restaurant:
Hy's Steakhouse

best sandwich:
Rueben panini at Heidi's downtown.

best late-night eatery:
for sentimental reasons, the Hungry Lion.

best coffee:
Cafe Laufer's coffee is the owner's pride, and with good reason.

whew!

I don't get out enough to respond to all these, but I can tell you what makes a place good for a business lunch as far as I'm concerned: fast service so you're in and out within an hour.

Here are some of my picks:

Hawaiian food
Hands-down, Helena's Hawaiian Foods on School St. If you haven't ever eaten here, just go. This is what Hawaiian food is "supposed to" taste like. ONO!!!

plate lunch

sushi
I like Sushi Locomotion in Salt Lake Shop. Ctr. Cheap and tasty! Friendly service. Their special shrimp roll is killa!

chinese food
seafood
Italian food

steakhouse
Have you never eaten at Hy's? Yow!

bakery
ice cream

burgers
You just GOTTA try Kiawe Grill. Original location across from Stadium Park in Moiliili. New location in between old Diner's and the Post Office on King St. in Kalihi. Kobe burgers, angus burgers, plus they have buffalo and ostritch burgers. (I haven't tried those two, yet, but the regular burgers are humongus and delicious!)

malasada
okazuya
oxtail soup
Japanese food
buffet

shave ice
Again, hands down, B&S Shave Ice on School Street and Frog Lane in Liliha. Tiny hole-in-the-wall run by Japanese man and his wife with antique shave ice machine. Painting on the wall above the shave ice machine says it all: Old, wooden plantation store. The wooden store stood on the spot where the current two-story building now stands. They make the "real" shave ice, soft and fluffy, melt in the mouth, not crunchy. Sweet, old-fashioned shave ice syrup. No modern concoctions, just plain old style shave ice--with ice cream or azuki, if you like! (Good boiled peanuts, too!)

family dining
fresh fish
Sunday brunch
manapua
lunch wagon
fast food
happy hour
vegetarian restaurant
business lunch
dessert
romantic restaurant
sandwich
late-night eatery
coffee

saimin
Shiro's! Location in Waimalu da bes'! I order No. 55: Shiro's Hula Burger Saimin. Yum!

I have to admit I don't go to many different places, and places I mention is where I normally go to.

Plate lunch - L&L Drive In
Sushi - Sushi Robot
Chinese food - U Choice Drive In
Burgers - Wendys or Jack-in-the-Box
Buffet - Pagoda (on certain nights I believe)
Manapua - U Choice Drive In
Sandwich - Subway
Late-night eatery - 7-11 or Likelike Drive In
Fast food - Jack-in-the-Box

What a long list of categories! (I confess, I don't even know what "okazuya" is.)

My favorite burger is definitely at Bubba Gump's.

I'm with Helen on fast food ... Jack, no contest.

I wonder why oxtail soup has become so expensive? Although I like Cuisine Tony very much, I don't recommend their oxtail soup even if they do make a point of stressing it as a specialty.

Odd to include that, and not pizza!

Odd, no one has mentioned The Willows, in any category.

Posted by Mitchell on March 31, 2004 7:07 PM:

Okay, listen, you gleeful lurkers. On ZZ's recommendation, I went to Kiawe Grill's new location on King Street near Waiakamilo, and it was really good. I'm excited about going back to try the burgers (I had the grilled steak, which was good but not outstanding), and grateful for being turned on to it.

So don't hold back, huh? You're depriving us of your precious knowledge.

When I named Aiea Taro Patch for best Hawaiian food, I hadn't thought of Helena's, though it is geographically right between two other places I mentioned: Kamehameha Bakery and Mitsu-Ken. Yes, I'm changing my vote in that category to Helena's.

Also, in the best late-night dining category, I'm chaning my vote, also for sentimental reasons, to Ken's House of Pancakes in Hilo. Wish I was there right now.

I somehow missed the best Chinese category, and here I'll confess that Chinese restaurants pretty much seem all alike to me. The only two restaurants that seem a step up are Kin Wah in Kaneohe and McCully Chop Suey on King Street. All the others tie for second.

I love that place, used to live right across the street when they were renovating it.

Posted by Linkmeister on June 27, 2004 8:50 PM:

For Mexican, Toritos (is that Market City where Foodland is by King and Harding?) is supposed to be very good. Banditos in Pearlridge is supposedly OK; I can't ever remember eating there, but my sister says it ain't bad.

Why are all the Mexican restaurants (other than Compadres) out Kaimuki way? Those of us out Ewa are getting shortchanged! ;)

Hawiian: Ono's
Plate lunch: To me L&L food taste foreign not local. Richies, Rainbows or Heights in Aiea (love the teri-fried noodle combo).
Japanese food: Yanagi, conveyor belt sushi doesn't come close. Terrific Korean owned Japanes Food. Gyotaku used to be better but the tempura now taste flat and isn't lacy.
Chinese: Royal Palace in Salt Lake, House of Hong in Waikiki and Aiea Chop Suey not only good food but the kitchens are clean.
Seafood, Todai except the lobster taste crappy. Haven't tasted one lobster on a buffet line that taste good yet.
Italian: Albero's in Aiea, reasonable and food is great. Liked it much better than Assagio's
Steakhouse: Hy's And Ruth's both are awesome.
Burger's W&M I like teriburgers. And these are the best. Wish someone would make a porkyboy like the old kenny's drivein.
Oxtail soup: Kam Bowl
Buffet: Makino no Chaya if you like great japanese food and lots of it this is the place.
Dessert: The best I have ever eaten was the chocolate souffle at Roy's served with Vanilla Ice Cream. This thing was incredible. No other dessert comes even close.
Manapua: Steamed Char Hung Sut.Baked Royal Kitchen of course.
Shave Ice: Waiola store has nice fine ground shave ice.
Sunday Brunch: the place in Aina Haina that had mueslix was my favorite but I can't remember the name.
