Beautiful Music

The nominees have been announced for the 2004 Na Hoku Hanohano Awards. Given out by the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts, the annual awards are always a spectacular sampling of island sounds. This year, perennial favorite Keali'i Reichel has ten nominations, but even newcomer Kainani Kahaunaele is making a splash with seven.

Did any of your faves make the list? Which do you think deserve the kudos? And who do you think is missing?

Azure all the way. Another Hawaii-based artist on Azure's CD is Tennyson Stephens, who is a phenomenal jazz pianist and singer. Azure departs from her standard jazz fare and comes through with flying colors. I also think the Hawaii Jazz Quartet made a strong showing with the group's new CD. John Kolivas is quite a composer. Noel Okimoto is a drummer Hawaii can be proud of. Also, I love C&K and went to the duo's reunion concert, which was one of the best Pops concerts I've been to. I'm not familiar with the work of many of the artists listed, so I can't provide a more qualified opinion.

I wish I knew more about jazz. I'm glad it as a genre is represented in the Hokus! I'm also glad to see C&K on the list, as well as - since I love cheese - Danny Couch.

I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I have not heard any of the nomineed CDs this year, not even Keali'i's.
