The New Morning Edition

I'm out the door (sans radio) at five every morning, so it's actually been quite a while since I've woken up to Bob Edwards's voice, but I still mourn his being replaced on Morning Edition.

So, who are the new people (I know theire names are Steve Inskeep and Renee Montagne, but who are they?) and what did you think of them?

I like 'em fine. Steve's voice doesn't have that resonant smoothness that Bob's does, but he's good too. Just in a different way. And the writing hasn't changed any, it's still got the same tone.

There was an NPR interview with Bob Edwards to talk about his new book, so it was weird to hear his voice there but not where I'd gotten used to hearing it. It was also interesting to hear how he speaks when not scripted. Not better, not worse, but different. A lot more "ums" than I would have thought. They did touch on the NPR reassignment, of course, but it sounds like he's smart enough to say all the right things. Now that he can sleep in, his family can have a dog again!

I agree that Steve is no less efficient and fitting than Bob in the booth, but that makes me wonder why the big change? If you're going to pull a signature voice, I'd think you'd at least really go for something different. If Bob was sounding too old, Steve doesn't exactly strike me as a young whippersnapper...

Edwards was on Fresh Air flogging the book too, and Terry Gross decided she just didn't want to go into the "reassignment" since she knows too many of the principals. I thought that was clever.

Inskeep is in DC; Montaigne is in LA. That makes some sense. I do think they handled it poorly; they got something like 10,000 e-mails objecting to the change. Go to the NPR.org site and you'll see a whole set of pages dealing with his departure.
