Kick It!

As a geeky dad, few things scare me more than the possibility of having an athletic kid. Katie starts soccer on Thursday. While Jen laments becoming, at last, a soccer mom, it falls to me to actually practice with her. For a grown man who still has his childhood instinct to flee from any area where balls are in motion, it will not be easy. Read on...

Heh... I had visions of my Alex being a baseball player when he was small. We suggested all kinds of organized sports (and other pastimes) but he wouldn't have any of it.

Then one day, out of the sky, he said he wanted to play soccer!

Now, I remind, I grew up in an age when there was no such thing as soccer (except for fütbol in Europe, so I had heard).

I knew absolutely nothing about soccer. But, being the archetypical "superdad," it was only a heartbeat before I became an assistant to the coach. And an assistant referee. (What the heck do I know about soccer??)

And following my boy's first season in AYSO U-10, I became a head coach, got certified and became center referee.

I am now on my fourth team, coaching a bunch of nutty kids from Aiea. Rockets Soccer Team

I have a much greater appreciation of the game of soccer now. One of the things I really like about it is the aspect of teaching kids to work together as a team instead of trying to be an all-star, all the time. It really is a kick (pun somewhat intended) when the kids grasp an idea and actually try to execute it! Big fun.

Congratulations and welcome to the game, Coach Ryan!

:)

My brothers and I were all raised with Soccer as the primary sport. It's a great game, I hope Katie has a lot of fun with it.
