Liz Sladen Double
Anyone ever seen re-runs of the hokey British TV series "Dr. Who" from the 1970s? If so, you will probably remember actress Liz Sladen who played a character named Sarah Jane. Well, I lived with an exact double of Liz on Maui around the same time the series became popular on the BBC.
Her name was Leslie Sternberg. I don't mean she had similar features, I mean the exact same face/hair/eyes/, same gorgeous body build, even born the same year as Liz.
But here's the odd part of the story: I'm sure Leslie had never seen "Dr. Who" when we were living together and I didn't see my first episode until the 1980s after I lost track of Leslie. I remember being stunned by the uncanny resemblance, but I thought it was just a freakish coincidence at the time.
Recently, I discovered a website with dozens of photos of Liz Sladen from the 1970s and now I'm convinced that Leslie was Liz Sladen's exact double. As in every person has an exact double somewhere in the world. (Imagine the theme song of "The Twilight Zone" playing at this point.)
Believe me, I knew every inch of Leslie's body -- from her somewhat large feet to her long legs/flat belly/curvaceous hips to the slight split between her upper front teeth -- and Liz Sladen had every single feature in duplicate.
Until I read Liz Sladen's biography online, I even wondered if Leslie had used that as a stage name to perform in "Dr. Who." For one thing, she was a drama queen if I ever met one. She also kept secrets about her past when we lived together. Years later I discovered that she was the daughter of a world-famous artist and grew up in New York City rather than California as she claimed.
Now I wonder if Leslie ever saw "Dr. Who" and realized she had a doppelganger living in England back in those days.
