You serious?

Just a quick thought. I was going through serious poi withdrawals a few days ago and was looking to see if I could find anywhere online that would ship it out of country. I found POI POWDER! Has anyone tasted this stuff? I am horrified and at the same time taken in with the idea of it. They do ship international but I don't want to plunk a chunk of money without some input from anyone who has tasted it.

Poi Powder... whoa!

Ain't nothing like the real thing! I tried a different brand long time ago and it was yucky nasty. I think just the thought and the act of preparing it la dat is a turn off.

Malama pono.

Tastes pretty much like the fresh kind... kinda steep at $6.00 for that little jar, though it's nice I can feed my baby small amounts at a time instead of buying a whole big bag of fresh poi.

We bought some last month, and the guy at Foodland looked at us as though we'd just bought a two headed cow. Hey, they were out of fresh kine.

And it was for the baby, who'd never had poi before so how would he tell the difference?

It's not bad, but then I'm no huge poi fan. I'm trying to appreciate it, really. The baby? He loves it. If you don't feed it to him fast enough he hollers.

Lisa,

Hmmm...I suppose I could understand how a guy at Foodland would give you the "You're buying a 2-headed cow?" look. Powdered poi just doesn't sound right.

The relative that's visiting figured that I'd be begging for some spam, but eh, I get enough free 'spam' from bored and uninspired. ;-)

Poi powder? You must be joking. *lol* What will they come up with next?

Please do us Hawaiians a favor. LEAVE IT IN THE BAG! Moa ono la dat.

Next you going have poi cosmetics. Eh, waite a minute. If you use my idea and become rich, I like half ok?

Aloha!

Great post! I've wondered about powdered poi, too. Sounds dodgy, but maybe it's good as baby food.

I decided to order frozen poi from Zippy's a few months ago. $17 for 3 pounds, plus $20 for shipping to the east coast. Crazy pricey, huh? I'm insane, yeah? That's the power of poi, though. Make a man do stupid things for it when deprived of it for 18 years. But it soothed my cravings for a while! I still have 1 more pound I'll break out this week when my brother visits.

I may actually give this a try.

I simply have not been able to find the right variety of taro here in Japan for make poi. Closest I've found is sato-imo which is fine for laulau (the leaves taste and smell the same) but the corm does not pound into anything tasting like real poi.

Now that I've had my fill of poi (I had an island houseguest last month), all I can say is that there's no 'taste' like home... there's no taste like home.

I've never tried poi before so wouldn't know the difference between fresh or powdered, but hey, if they can make instant mash potatoes, why not poi?
