I'd like to invite anyone and everyone to join me at the `Iolani Palace grounds, Old Archives building, tomorrow at 9:15am for Hawaiian Quilting class with the Serrao family. I've been participating for over a year now, and I really enjoy it. Talking story while sewing is very relaxing.
MORE...Mark from boingboing.net has posted a link to a small movie clip on KHET's website which features Jake Shimabukuro doing what he does best.
This means a bit more exposure for the ukulele man, but no one on the discussion board knows his name. Shall we rectify that?
Posted by Vivi at 07:24 AMYesterday the nation was taken aback by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the Pledge of Allegiance is unconstitutional. In a 2-1 decision, the court ruled that the phrase "one nation under God" violated the 1st amendment guarantee of separation of church and state.
Frankly, I'm surprised that a constitutional challenge took this long in coming. But it came at the worst possible time.
MORE...Once again, "no" is the big news in local politics first Jeremy Harris pulls out, and now, local business bigwig Walter Dods has announced he's also not running.
Once again, the Dems are in a tizzy, for during the ten days Dods was a possible contender, their dimmed hopes of keeping control of the Governor's office seemed bright. Now they're left with, it seems, second-bests: Ed Case, Mazie Hirono, and D.G. "Andy" Anderson. Getting stuck in a second leadership vacuum so soon has got to smart.
Is there a chance for a second (or third) wind? Or are the Dems' long, shining, and infamous days in the sun finally at an end?
MORE...True story: I was just on Fametracker when I got into a discussion about Japanese soap operas on KIKU. I started going on and on about this one Japanese soap in particular to which I got so addicted that I nearly stopped going to meetings for ASUH just so I could catch this one show, and see it till the very end.
MORE...I have always wanted to go to one of those expensive writing retreats where everyone with a love for writing gathers and creates and shares and draws inspiration from each other. Well now the joys of the retreat can be found at Reason In A Circle.
This great new site is the creation of Tyd, and was developed for the creative writer in us all. Instead of being asked to write an entire story, each member takes a turn at developing one story. As each member takes their turn in submitting their part, unexpected twists and turns in the plot are sure to happen. Once every member has participated, the story is then complete and a new story is developed.
I love this idea, and I think it is long over-due. It seems like the perfect place to practice writing skills, draw inspiration from others, and to have fun. It will be interesting to follow along as each story takes a life of its own. Check out the site for more details, and don't forget to sign up.
Posted by at 12:48 PMNow that the movie has opened, and the original thread has gotten crowded, perhaps this is a time to open up a second Lilo and Stitch thread.
MORE...The Associated Press reported today that 'The Rock' the wrestling and movie star Hawaii claims as one of its own is hoping to play King Kamehameha in a motion picture based on his life. Believe it or not, 'The Rock' reports that Sony has already purchased the rights to the story. (Makes me wonder who owned it.)
I guess Dwayne Johnson picked up on something while attending Washington Intermediate and McKinley High School. But something tells me the movie will be less "Birth of a Kingdom" and more "Pali Smackdown!"

MORE...After being briefly deposed by "Nintendo News" KHNL-8 (NBC) in February, Joe Moore and KHON-2 (FOX) returned this week to number one in the perennial local broadcast news wars.
Joe Moore, the 8,000-pound gorilla of Hawaii broadcast media, will probably remain at the top until he retires. A fact that some folks simply can't understand. (If I want relentless wry commentary with my news, I'll watch "The Daily Show.") He's not everyone's cup of tea, obviously.
If you had to watch the local news I know folks who've sworn it off completely which network or anchors would you watch? Why?
MORE...Since Father's Day is coming up pretty soon - and, no, don't act like you forgot about it - maybe now's a good time to talk about the things we've learned from our fathers - and, come to think of it, our parents.
MORE...Since I've come to see that I'm not the only DC-area expatriate here, I was wondering if anyone else was planning on going to the lei-draping ceremony at Statuary Hall this weekend? There is a replica of the King Kamehameha statue there, and they will be having a small ceremony to celebrate his birthday. I've also heard that there is a replica of the Father Damien statue. The ceremony starts at noon on Sunday (2002/06/09). You need to RSVP so you can be put on the security list (since it is in the Capitol Building). If you want RSVP information, please let me know, and I'll email it to you (don't want to put some poor soul's email address and/or phone number on the web).
Also, there is a Kahoolawe exhibit at the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building taking place from June 5th to September 2nd. Anyone interested in a field trip? :)
Just in off the wire (courtest of IMR-L):
OZAWA BABY BORN, MOTHER RESTING
HONOLULU -- Add one more to the Ozawa clan.
At 9:23 AM, Jennifer Ozawa gave birth to a baby boy at the Kapiolani Women's and Children's Center in Honolulu. Ryan, Jennifer's husband, said that she is sleeping after giving birth via ceasarian section. She was not available for comment at press time.
"The baby is seven pounds five ounces and nineteen and a half inches long," Ozawa said. "He looks like what Katie looked like when she was born -- he has lots of hair."

That is, if there's someone around to shoot the breeze with.
