Just Add Water

"Just Add Water." I remember titling a blog entry the same way a year or two ago and it had to do with Hawaii's motorists' difficulty with driving in inclement weather conditions. Being blessed with beautiful sunny and dry weather for about 90% of the year, we're not accustomed to having to deal with the elements while behind the wheel. Today's traffic fiasco was simply further evidence to this assumption.

Ophelia Z

I assume (and hope) Ryan has saved all the Ophelia Z material and think he should make a serious effort to find a publisher (the old fashioned book kine) for it. Not only is it a fine work of fiction, the fact that it was such an enormously successful hoax adds extra newsworthy value.

The Internet Archive has a 1997 web page of mine, The Diary Keepers and I gotta say, Ryan surely did look a lot more glamorous in those days. :) (That photo of the sleepy Jay T remains one of my favorites in web history.)

Things Not Done

The thread about the film festival reminded me I've not yet seen a single film at one of them, even though some have been tempting. But then, I've been here fourteen years and I've still never:

Sheez, what have I been doing with myself all these years?

Cuisine Tony

On Albert's suggestion we tried out a new place called Cuisine Tony located on Kapiolani Blvd across the street from the Pan Am Building.

Part of the adventure of going there is checking out the various dish names that includes a country name to it.

Las Vegas, HI

There are many "Ninth Island" contenders on the West Coast and the Mainland, but few with the sheer size of Vegas. I was always impressed by the number of people fleeing Hawaii for the desert, but now, even the New York Times has noticed. Hawaiians Find an Unlikely Eden in Las Vegas, the headline reads, and the story opens with a surfer... in a wave pool.

"In Hawaii you have a better quality of life," says Stephen Lum of No Ka Oi Realty (of Nevada). "In Vegas you have a better standard of living."

I Oughtta Be in Pictures

Well. I finally did it. I broke down, and I purchased an individual membership with the Hawaii International Film Festival. The selection this year is wonderful, and Roger Ebert's shot-by-shot, three-day-seminar this year is on Citizen Kane. I had to do it.

Fuzzy Numbers

Watching all these Linda Lingle and Mazie Hirono commercials really bugs me. After learning about statistics it is easy to see why it’s so hard to trust really any one candidate. While I understand that it is not the candidate, rather their team, that chose to mud sling, it really upsets me how they use numbers to trick people.

Missing Stella already

Dang, haven't been sorrier to see an online journal vanish since the disappearance of Ophelia and Jay T.

Maybe Stella will discover she's so addicted to it, she'll reconsider. :)

Aromas

"It's as if we've been peed on by a thousand cats and practically left for dead."

Stella shouldn't feel that the week's sometimes endless rains have give only her neighborhood that particular scent. A young friend of mine said something very similar about an area at UH-Manoa on Thursday. (Yeh, I know there are plenty cats on campus but not THAT many!)

Surprisingly, that drainage dump area at Magic Island has been neither noisey nor smelly, but the "waste water plant" at the Yacht Club corner has been positively reeking, can't sit at the picnic tables anywhere near it, even when the rains did stop.

Constitutional Questions

In addition to the hotly contested battle for governor, and to replace the late Rep. Patsy Mink ("Death and Scandal Leaving Democrats in Chaos in Hawaii," reports the New York Times yesterday), islanders will also have to decide on three proposed amendments to the Hawaii State Constitution.

Question 1 covers legislative candidate residency requirements. Question 2 suggests assisting not-for-profit (but private) schools. And Question 3 proposes initiation of felony prosecutions by written information. Are you familiar with the issues? And how will you vote?

KGMB retrospective

Did anyone see the KGMB self-documentary last night, hosted by Bob Sevey? Lots of clips of (mostly) local entertainment programs, some of which I even remembered.

Gillian Emerges Fighting

We probably missed the Ozawa's a few time and didn't even know it. My wife was at Kapiolani for the past three weeks. First two for pre-term labor and the last for the actual birth of Gillian.

Born premature at 32 weeks, Gillian got lucky. She is still in the NICU, but is doing good. No problems with breathing (which was a major concern), etc.--a fighter. She's active and it's just a matter of putting some weight on her since she only weighs a little under 4 lbs right now.

For the time being, she'll remain under the care of NICU (although she was moved to the second floor yesterday, because other babies with more serious problems needed the space in the NICU).

No estimate as to when Gillian will be home, but it's okay. We want her as strong as possible when she meets the rest of the family.

Linglefacts.com

Okay, has anyone checked out this site yet? Apparently the GOP's pants are in such a bunch over this site that they're actually accusing the Democratic party of cybersquatting.

Well, let's see: it is clear that the Democratic party really is behind this, and I'm not surprised that the game has come to this level, but - cybersquatting? Hello?

Jiro...chengee...

So an exciting time has come for me as Kikaida will be coming out on DVD October 15. I just never realized that the majority of Kikaida fanaticism only existed in the Japan/Hawai`i/West Coast (?) area until yesterday. While visiting several DVD stores in Manhattan which are supposed to be "exclusive" stores for anime and Japan type show sales, I asked around to see if they were going to get the DVD. ALL of them had no idea who Kikaida was! I was truly shocked. I've resorted to asking a friend back home to buy the DVD for me.

Kikaida is now another item I've put on the list of things I miss about home. Go...go...go!

JC Penney Stores Closing

It looks like we have yet another victim of the lackluster economy. They're planning on closing their Pearlridge, Ala Moana, and Hilo stores on January 10. As a mallrat from way back, I'll certainly miss the stores, but I am wondering what could fill those spaces?

Minor Majority

A recent issue of Honolulu Magazine (I didn't even know it was still around, but I'm getting copies now at work, and it looks great) was dubbed "The People Issue," and examined who we are. Although at heart revisiting the same Census demographic data we all heard about months ago, they approached it from a fun angle, putting a human face on the numbers.

They also took an unusual look at ethnicity and geography, listing the neighborhoods with the highest concentration of specific races. Most Haole? Spreckelsville, Maui (89%) and Lanikai (87.5%). Most Japanese? Upper Manoa (64.9%) and... Woodlawn Manoa (62.9%). I have to admit, and hate to admit, there were no surprises.

"Note"-iced

From ABC News' The Note: "You thought New Jersey was complicated — Roll Call 's Pershing gets into the complexities of the prospect of not one but two special elections, in addition to the November general election, to completely replace the late Rep. Patsy Mink (D). The time difference tends to quash interest in Hawaii politics, but this fracas is worth paying attention to." LINK

Gee, and I thought it was because we were so solidly Democratic.

Memories of Klum gym

Reading how well the Wahine are doing makes me reminisce about Klum gym. I only went once. But what an adrenaline rush it was. It was back in the Tita Ahuna, Teee Williams days.

Swallowed in a sea of fans, we made our way in. How such a small gym could fit so many people? Sitting, squished into a space half the size of my okole. Screaming so loud I lost my voice. And happy. Very happy.

Has your family been stocking up on rice and toilet paper? Are you worried about the dockworker lockouts? How do you think the situation will affect you and your family? I'm not too concerned yet, but I certainly hope things are resolved soon.
