6th Annual Hawai'i Music Awards

I heard about this from a blog acquaintance in Pennsylvania, for cryin' out loud. The Internet voting phase goes on until March 15. I barely recognize a single name, but the rest of us may do a little better.

Blogger BBQ

How time flies! February brings our next picnic. At this point, it looks like our place and time are set: the afternoon of Sunday, Feb. 16 at Magic Island (at Ala Moana Beach Park). So let's get a handle on who's coming, with what, and exactly how much geeking out (and kid talk) we're going to see!

Lingle's State of the State

Simulcast on the major local TV network affiliates, KSSK AM 590 and on the web, Republican Gov. Linda Lingle (check the spiffy new website!) will lay out, for the record, her vision for the next four years. Will her historic address form a solid launching pad for a successful, bipartisan-led legislative session, or finally put the first cracks — needed or not — in her relatively impressive first-timer's honeymoon?

Allow me to introduce myself

Aloha! My name is Jason, which is quite obvious. I was born and raised in Honolulu (Salt Lake area) for the first half of my life, then like many other islanders, I moved to the leeward side for our peice of the pie. I've lived all over the island, but I consider Honolulu as my hometown. I graduated from Moanalua in 2001. I moved to Portand, OR on July 18, 2002 on a whim, but I will return back to the islands, as my high hopes were shot down with a bazooka.

TV commercials you love to watch

While TV commercials are a necessary nuisance while watching TV, once in a great while you come across one that just makes you laugh. Granted I don't feel like going out and buying their product but at least they deserve a mention.

Yeah, But Can They Write?

I read lots of comics, more so than I should, and after reading about how local comic book artists are finding the business difficult, my feeling on the matter is that while some of the local artists can draw (and I'm using the phrase loosely here), many of them simply can't write or tell a good story on par with what's being produced by the mainland artists/writers. In my opinion, that's why the locals are failing. That's real life reality.

Oh, and I also hate it when I see stuff like this.

And here's a local boy that succeeded.

The Living Nation

I just saw on the News about a group in Hawaii known as The Living Nation that wants Independence for all of Hawai'i. They say the overthrow of the Queen in 1893 was an illegal act of war and an apology from the President and Congress is not enough. The group is growing in numbers, marching and holding "rallies" this next week in Honolulu.

Hawaiian Barbecue

Imagine my surprise the other day when I drove past a sign here in the San Francisco bay area. The sign read: GRAND OPENING! HAWAIIAN BARBECUE!

A quick u-turn brought me into the shopping plaza parking lot. Sure enough, nestled right there between a SuperCuts and a Radio Shack was a brand-spanking new branch of L & L Drive-Inn. I didn't even know that there were branches of L & L outside of Hawaii.

UH and their new Tobacco Policy

UH has unveiled their new smoking policy...

It is now not permitted to smoke at UH's breezeways, hallways, couryards, and outside restaurant areas. You also cannot smoke 50 feet around bustops. The reasoning is that innocent non-tobacco consumers should not be exposed to secon-hand smoke simply because they're attending the University.

The Blind Chase

Now here's a question: What is it about a beautiful woman that will cause a guy to be so blind to her otherwise blaring deficiencies?

For some guys, a beautiful woman can say something like, "The sky is so blue," and they might say, "Wow, she's deep." But if an unattractive woman were to say the same thing, they might say, "God, she's so irritating." Not all guys are like this, I realize, but the proportions are somewhat disturbing.

I have a friend who is interested in someone blaringly shallow and self-centered, and he can't help but think she's "awesome." He keeps asking my opinion, and I keep talking till I'm blue in the face, and he thinks I'm being unfair to her. Ultimately, he thinks I'm delusional and will continue the chase. Oh, the human species.
