People We Love

Okay, the annoying post was really fun, but lest I (or we) should come across as a community of grouches, how about our list of people in the public eye who really appeal to us?

The World as Blog

Remember the GeoURL discussion a while back? Somebody got really creative and created a world map indicating newly-updated blogs through the code. Let the owner explain it:

The New UH Logo

The controversial Branding Project at the University of Hawaii is entering its final phase, with two proposed designs unveiled yesterday for the new, official university logo. Dubbed "Wave" and "Spectrum," they're the result of a yearlong, $82,000 process "to pursue a new, cohesive graphic identity for the UH system."

What do you think of the designs? UH wants to hear from you. So do I.

Gas Station Sat Dishes

Does anyone know what the satellite dishes on service stations are used for?

It goes something like "nah nah nah..."

Random thought at 2am: does anyone remember the music used for the Suzuki Grand Vitara commercial a few years ago? It's the ad with the guy driving all over Oahu to get Shave Ice and other goodies. I emailed Suzuki Hawaii but they never replied.

While I'm asking... can anyone tell me the name of the music used for the Volkswagen commercial - (ukulele instrumental)?

Pictures needed

I put together a very small and fairly amateur site about the Hawai'i Islanders AAA baseball team a while back, but I need more images. If anyone has some old scannable photos of the team, individual players, or games at Aloha or the Termite Palace, I'd love to hear from you. The e-mail address is on the first page.

I have no idea why I didn't think of asking in this forum before. Not so smart, yeah?

Wedding fashions

Once again I am requesting help, this time in finding engagement and wedding clothes.

First on the list is Pineapple Moon clothing for our engagement photos- there's a great silk design they have, with a pattern of plumeria blossoms and leaves scattered in a wide pattern. Currently, they're only sold through the MX- any military types out there willing to help?

Next is an Ao Dai, or traditional Vietnamese wedding costume. I haven't really found anyplace specializing in these here.

Hau`oli Pakoa!

Or, if you're Protestant, perhaps I should say, "Hau`oli La I Ala Hou Ai Ka Haku!" Easter in Hawaii is a many splendored thing. While the Catholic and Christian faiths are thriving in the islands, our diverse cultures and faiths bring a wide range of ways to observe Good Friday and Easter Sunday, from midnight mass to lazy beach barbeques.

What are your favorite symbols and customs of the holiday — if any? (Peeps!) What do you plan to do this weekend?

HawaiiStories Soundtrack

When an `ohana blogs on the web, and lots of people read it, does it make a sound? It might now, with the new HawaiiStories Media library! The idea has been around a while, but only in my recent flu medicine-induced haze was I finally able to install some software, run some tests, and even research some attorney repellant (in the form of "fair use" fine print). It's "HawaiiStories Radio," KHSR if you like, with a geekly twist.

So who wants to play?

SARS Scare

I just heard on the news last night about a flight attendant who was diagnosed with SARS and had stayed in Honolulu overnight at a hotel in Waikiki. As if I wasn't frightened enough. Ever since this SARS started to take off I have had a fear that it might turn up here in Hawaii, due to the number of travelers from the Asian continent. I am seeing more and more people wearing those little paper masks which makes me uneasy and I find myself getting far away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing at the store.

I just got over being sick myself, a sinus cold from last week. And over these last two days I have had flu like symptoms. Last night was the worst, I was convinced that I had contracted SARS. But I woke up this morning feeling a whole lot better.

Is anyone else worried about SARS making it's way to the islands?

All in Da Ohana

I'm going out on a limb here, but... do you folks remember those Andy Bumatai specials that they used to play at least once a year on TV, "All in Da Ohana" and "High School Daze" back in the 80's?

HPR/NPR

As anyone who listens to HPR knows, it is doing one of its begging bowl routines. Okay, I admit, this one is not as obnoxious as some in the past have been. But in ordinary times, I just don't turn it on during the "pledge drive". These are not, of course, ordinary times.

We touched on this in the "Sweetheart" thread.

15 Minutes of Internet Fame

I read other people's journals. Alot. And Sunday, two of the journals I read religiously were featured in a newspaper article in their hometown of New Haven, CT. I thought you guys might like to see what the article had to say about online journals and their creators. Read the article here.

Read the Journal Here:
The Book of Rob - Rob Rummel-Hudson's great journal.
Bobofett - That sassy lass, Dana! (heh)

Would you enjoy your journal being in the limelight? Do you promote your journal? Why, and how? Let's talk shop for a moment, shall we?

Crash, Boom, Bang

Hawaii doesn't get many thunderstorms, especially of the magnitude of this morning's storm. When I was awakened during the wee hours of the morning, my mind, still half asleep, believed for a brief moment that those crashes and booms and flashes of light were brought upon us by enemy fire.

Sweetheart!

Don't you love it when you walk past someone you think is one of the most adorable, most desirable people you've ever seen ... and they look at you and give you a sweet smile, as if they'd read your mind and were pleased with the compliment?

Support Adult Ed

A rally to support Adult Education will be held this Thursday, April 3, from 10:00am-11:30am at the Capitol Rotunda.

Governor Lingle's proposed budget cuts to the Adult Education program would essentially kill the program, limiting classes to a handful of courses open to a select few. This would make obtaining a GED, learning essential job skills (or new skills required for career advancement), and even obtaining US Citizenship much more difficult for many people.

Where Do Broken Hearts Go?

A couple of years ago, I had this great idea: make some good-quality t-shirts with "Unapologetically Single" screen-printed across the front, and "...but email me if you're cute, employed, and not boring" or something like that. I am still quite convinced I could sell a few of those things.

Despite that being a pretty good summary of my love life, I received a call last night from the woman I've loved since 1988: she's getting married. To a guy who, until a couple of years ago, was one of my best friends.

Joe Moore, Trini Kaopuiki to Wed

Both viewers and staffers of KHON's evening newscast were stunned last night by an on-air announcement by longtime anchor Joe Moore that he and former weather anchor Trini Kaopuiki are engaged and plan to marry in June. Drawing out his traditional signoff even longer than usual, Moore also announced that he would be seeking approval from FOX management to go on sabbatical — both for the wedding, and for a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to star in a journalism-themed reality series planned on a major network.

Acknowledging that his interactions with his fiancé were "a bit icy" and regularly laced with barbs, Moore noted in a subsequent statement that their relationship was "like one of those romantic comedies when two people who hate each other end up together."
