I'm concerned. Alex the spokesdog for CPB has gone missing. Has he been thrown out on his tail? I haven't seen an ad featuring him for a while; is CPB being disloyal to its own spokesdog? There are three video presentations of Alex listed at the bank website, but they're the same three we've already seen...the audition, the promotion, and the golf ball fetch.
Where are you, Alex? Speak up, boy!
Posted by Linkmeister at 08:29 PMI don't know why I do it, but I read (or at least skim) the letters to the editor in both local papers on an almost-daily basis. Most of what people write is drivel, but it's drivel that they care about, and that's worth taking a look at, I guess. It's also a regular reminder to me that my job as an English teacher will never be quite done (or even remotely close!).
MORE...Was channel surfing today and I ran across a show on the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim called "Kikaider".
MORE...HawaiiStories fan and budding blogger Burt turned me on to Ryze a few weeks ago. Meanwhile, bloggers were abuzz with the launch of LinkedIn. Both were compared to Friendster, meanwhile, as well as the UK-centric Ecademy. Of course, I had to try them all.
Each has the same basic idea fostering networks and making contacts, be they merely social or (ideally, in most cases) professional. It's all about trust, and friends of friends. I can see the promise of real, practical benefits, but so far it's mostly geeky fun.
Then again, my "network" is pretty small. Won't you be my friend?
MORE...I don't have too much fond memories of the Taste of Honolulu Festival: my first visit involved my temperamental ex and I getting into a huge argument. Bad experience. The next visit seemed like a horrible cosmic mistake: it was with a guy that seemed like he was interested in nothing I had to offer. He wasn't someone I'd choose to remember. The most recent visit was with Scott. Thankfully, Scott and I didn't get into an argument, but if he had said "The Taste of Honolulu is the best and most fun event ever!" I think I would've had to lay the smack-down on him...because it wasn't.
MORE...The other day I was having a conversation with my friend. He's about 12 years older than me and we were talking about how much Hawaii has changed since his youth. A comment he made made me a little sad: "I think my generation, those who grew up in the 70's or so, got go experience the last drops of what Hawaii used to be."
MORE...One can't help but wonder if the obake (ghosts) that local author Glen Grant mythologized are welcoming him to the other side with a big party tonight. A penultimate storyteller, Grant who quite literally had the trademark on "chicken skin" died today at the age of 56 after a long battle with cancer.
MORE...It was announced today that Hilo Macaroni Factory closed.
They haven't made macaroni in more than 50 years, but are well known for their local Saloon Pilot Crackers.
MORE...Woods Cross High School in Utah has banned lei at their graduation ceremony. Apparently they feel "(It) lessens the dignity of the pomp and the circumstance and the ceremony that surrounds graduation".
Personally, I think it's a bunch of uptight hooha (banning lei, not the controversy surrounding the decision). But I'm wondering how you guys feel about it.
Posted by Hayneyz at 11:28 AMHawaii is known as the "Aloha State," and people sometimes refer to it as the "Pineapple State," the "Youngest State," or the "Paradise of the Pacific." Now, a new name could be added to this list -- "Sweetest Smelling Feet State!"
Get a "whiff" of this: According to a consumer sampling conducted by the maker of Odor-Eaters products, Hawaii has the highest per capita consumption of Odor-Eaters products in the nation. In fact, Hawaiians use Odor-Eaters products at a rate more than double the national average.
No talk stink, eh?
Posted by Linkmeister at 02:27 PMIn case anybody wanted some, so that sites using kahako and 'okina can be properly displayed, here is a page with TrueType Hawaiian fonts for both PC and Mac users.
Posted by Hayneyz at 02:18 PMI have been trying to get some music on my site... but with no luck. I tried to upload a song onto it but the file was too large. Even if I use a zip file, I am still unable to get some songs on my website. Any suggestion? Oh... another thing... would be great if i dont have to pay any fees for the program. :)
Posted by Heidi at 07:56 PMWell, as much immortality as a chiseled brick can give a person. (Although this is about the University, I don't think it qualifies for the "education" category.)
As Ryan mentioned sometime ago, graduates were given an opportunity to .... errr ... sponsor a brick. Well, it is happening. Despite the fact they only finished that absurd "gateway" across from the law complex, they are digging it up to replace plain bricks with named bricks.
MORE..."Today, the Council of Europe (an influential quasi-governmental body that drafts conventions and treaties) is to finalize a proposal that would force all Internet news organizations, moderated mailing lists and even web logs (blogs) to allow a right of response to any person or organization they criticize. This would mean that you would be required to post the responses as well as authenticate their origin and make the responses available for some period of time. This will likely have a chilling effect on Internet communication (at least in Europe)."
MORE...I've got a passion for puppets. I spent the entire day today working on putting together an online puppet museum, and it got me thinking! After 10 hours of shooting pictures, and madly FTPing... What's YOUR passion?
MORE...I woke up and opened up The Honolulu Advertiser online and learn that my favorite Trading Spaces designer is here for two book signing events. Vern Yip! He of the silken pillowcase covers and linen duvets, dragonfly motif and candle-cluster meditation spaces...and I have the weekend off!

Posted by Raevyn808 at 09:16 AMLately I've been trying to hit up some of the well known and not so known local restaurants. I went to Dave 'N Busters last week, the food was alright but what I really enjoyed was the games and atmosphere which I'm sure is why most people go there. I've become dedicated to buying my Mauna Pua from U Choice on Kaheka St. and the Sbarro in Waikiki is my new local pizza joint. As for Drive In's I like to go for breakfast at Rainbows in Kapahulu or the Like Like on Keaumoku. I've heard a lot about L & L but still havn't tried it yet. Assaggio's in Ala Moana had a great Chicken Parm and I've been wanting to try Auntie Pasto's. I once ate Malasada's from the food court in Ala Moana Center but was told that Leanord's in Kapahulu made the best Malasada's.
So what are some of your favorite foods? Or your favorite restaurants to eat these foods? Any good hidden eateries for plate lunches or local cuisine?
Posted by James at 02:24 AMI had a crisis with my Win95 machine yesterday; the video died, although I could see scandisk operate. Once that procedure completed the screen turned to diagonal mush. I thought it was a monitor problem, because it's been unreliable when powering up for a while (see here for details).
Anyway, I need a hardware geek to help me remove the hard drive from the old machine and hook it up to the new(er) machine as a slave drive, complete with ribbon cabling and jumper settings.
MORE...I don't mean to start the week off on a morbid note, but I think it's important this post finally makes it's way into cyberspace.
For as long as I can remember, we've always treated our dead relatives as though they were still alive. We spent this past Memorial Day journeying as a family to three separate graveyards, depositing flowers into chipped vases and observing detailed headstones. Each headstone was greeted as though the person were still alive.

No doubt there's been lots to catch up on since we last got together, and as always, we've also had new members join our 'ohana in that time as well. I don't want to waste a single sunny day... let's pick where and when and start plotting the menu already!
