Goo in the News

The smelly, algae-filled "reflecting pools" at the Hawaii State Capitol have been a longtime source of frustrated and disgusted commentary, but now the disgusting wet mess has hit the big time. Tomorrow's New York Times features an article titled, "In a Sparkling State, Goo Fills the Symbolic Pools."

Now everyone knows about the problem. What's the solution? Worth fixing, or only after a few other foul matters are attended to?

Search for the Loco Moco

A hamburger steak on a bed of rice with eggs over easy covered with brown gravy. It is the most delicious creation I ever stumbled upon during my time in Hawai'i. But who makes it best? Or even halfway decent? I've tried a lot of different places, mostly within Honolulu and still I'd have to say that Zippy's makes it best. I know that somewhere on this island there is a great Loco Moco waiting to be discovered. Does anybody know where?

Songs to Say Goodbye

My grandmother died last week. She was a tough broad that lived a full life. For her funeral this weekend, I wanted to have some nice music to greet her family and friends. It's a celebration of her life, but also a chance to say goodbye... and I'd love to hear your suggestions on songs that you think convey the sentiment well. I'm especially interested in Hawaiian songs, be they specifically written to say farewell or simply sweet, gentle melodies to set the stage for the service.

Even if sad songs are not your style, I'd still be curious to know... what would be on your "Goodbye Mix" CD?

Spyware

Has anyone in here tried Ad-Aware from Lavasoft? I just downloaded it and ran a scan of my two hard drives; it found about 400 "objects," but many of them look like cookies. I'm wondering if the software is smart enough to understand what a legitimate cookie is and what is not.

Anyone know?

Movable Type 3.0

With the new pricing structure of Movable Type, I'm wondering what it will do to community weblogs like this one. Especially considering the cost of the new software for this site alone would be $599.95 (for a limited time, $699.95 thereafter). I'm guessing that most won't upgrade to the new version and will keep their current version or will folks be migrating to other, cheaper software.

Who is your Late Night Host?

With all of the late night talk shows on TV these days, it's hard to settle on just one. A lot has changed over the years and the number of different shows has gotten to where you can't even count them on two hands.

So from Johnny Carson to Jimmy Kimmel who is your host?

Iz Back in iTunes Store

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole is back in the iTunes Music Store where "Facing Future" is featured in the "Just Added" section on the front page of the store.

One other Iz album, "Alone In Iz World," is available on the store at this point, though it's only a partial album.

Looks like Mountain Apple worked out the licensing problems. Hopefully Iz can regain his top-10 position in the store once more.

Noticed a couple of other Mountain Apple artists in the store including The Brothers Cazimero and Hapa.

The New Morning Edition

I'm out the door (sans radio) at five every morning, so it's actually been quite a while since I've woken up to Bob Edwards's voice, but I still mourn his being replaced on Morning Edition.
