From Daiei to Donki

Donki
Don Quijote is a quirky Japanese department store chain that's bringing its distinctly colorful, sometimes chaotic shopping experience to Hawaii. Its flagship store, the first in the U.S., held its grand opening at the former Daiei location on Kaheka Street near Ala Moana today. The carnival atmosphere outside (courtesy lion dancers, live music by Jake Shimabukuro, and wandering balloon artists) was echoed throught the aisles within, the place packed floor to ceiling with just about anything you could imagine, and with psychedelic signs and banners (and the store's blue penguin mascot Donpen) dominating the view in every direction. MORE...

Building a Mystery

No one should ever have to guess what it is you do. If they do, your brand isn’t a very effective one. While clever business titles and brand names will help you stand out, they also run you the risk of remaining indescribable – a detriment to your potential customer base!

A Bad Case of Mail-Practice

It’s not something we readily think about – but that’s why I’m here to bring it to your attention: never ever use your personal e-mail account for business/professional purposes.

It already peeves me when people solicit my e-mail box for business, but to do it from the e-mail address companypresident@yahoo.com? That’s downright unprofessional! Yahoo!, Road Runner or Hotmail have nothing to do with your business, so why should they be at the bottom of all your business proposals?

A Sweet Deal?

I was shocked to see the headlines on the Star-bulletin website indicating Hershey to buy Mauna Loa!

I have mixed feelings about big mainland corporations buying out locally-owned companies like Mauna Loa Mac. After all, isn't it part of the charm to buy a distinctly "Hawaiian" product that is produced by a company that is owned and operated in Hawaii?

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss!

I had a really interesting Instant Message chat with a friend inside the hallowed walls of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin today.

Seems a long-time Honolulu Advertiser executive suddenly defected to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin to assume the role of president and publisher of "the other guys." And he took another of his highly-placed buddies with him!

The IM chat session (read more) includes the text of the email that Advertiser publisher Mike Fisch sent to his staff on learning of the defections.

The Star-Bulletin site has a very short piece in the Breaking News section. I'm sure tomorrow's paper will have a bit more. Enjoy!

How You Fly and Why?

This past weekend, the family and I visited the Big Island. I flew Aloha, because that's who my employer uses, and the wife and kids flew Hawaiian, because I personally like them better. The split reminded me of how locals all tend to have their favorite, like Coke vs. Pepsi, and are similarly loyal... quirks and prices be damned. Who do you prefer, and why?

I didn't know it closed

I was reading the January 22, 2004 edition of the Honolulu Star Bulletin and I came across Erika Engle's TheBuzz column (and for some strange reason it can't be linked to directly) where it mentions "Expanding cheeseburger chain and virus vaccinations" which I will only mention the cheeseburger chain part here.

Demand a raise? I'd be fired.

Quick poll.

In the private sector--the real world--if I demanded my employer for a raise and they refused and then I walked off the job as a result, I would be fired.

How about everyone else on here?

Chain Me Up, Chain Me Down

I wish it weren't so, but I just LOVE the gigantic bookstores at Waikele, Ward Centre, and Kahala Mall. What's not to love? Huge selection, good prices, great service, and an atmosphere that encourages browsing and taking one's time.

Wal*Mart! Twenty-four hours a day and lots of parking! Tower Records! Open every day of the year! Starbucks! One on every corner! Blockbuster! Lots and lots of copies of new mainstream releases!

Believe me, I want to support local small businesses, and I'm even willing to sacrifice some of the advantages I get from shopping at these national chains, but where can I go?

Happy Workers

What are some Hawaii companies that treat their employees respectfully? I read a journal entry from one of our own (excellent) bloggers about the health coverage and scholarship opportunities provided by Zippys. Makes me want to be more loyal to this restaurant. I know that no workplace is perfect, but if the principles are in place, the company will generally do good for the community. Any other companies you'd recommend based on their business principles and ethics?

Wal-Mart Coming to Honolulu

Is the controversy over the new Wal-Mart store going up on Keeaumoku Street dead? Despite the protests and last month's lawsuit, the foundation is poured, pillars are pounded in and signs are proudly declaring the site a "future home."

Hawaii Nurses Strike Back

With the addition of the Queen's Medical Center, there are now three hospitals facing nursing strikes: Kuakini, St. Francis, and Queen's - by far the largest. And by the reception the picketers are getting with their "Honk If You Love Nurses" sign, most seem on their side in the walkout.

Of course, the strike means a reduction in services (including life-sustaining ones like dialysis - and there's a lawsuit in the works now to force "vital" specialized nurses back to work), and even the turning away of patients. It's frightening.

Japanese "Investment"?

Now this is odd. Hawai'i is being used as sort of an offshore business incubator for small Japanese firms, according to this article from the WSJ's Startup Journal. Since it's the WSJ and thus normally subscription-only, I'll put the story below.

JC Penney Stores Closing

It looks like we have yet another victim of the lackluster economy. They're planning on closing their Pearlridge, Ala Moana, and Hilo stores on January 10. As a mallrat from way back, I'll certainly miss the stores, but I am wondering what could fill those spaces?

Locked Docks

Has your family been stocking up on rice and toilet paper? Are you worried about the dockworker lockouts? How do you think the situation will affect you and your family? I'm not too concerned yet, but I certainly hope things are resolved soon.
