Unusual conditions on the Big Island

Somewhere in what would be typical Hilo weather there appears to be an unusually high amount of news reporters sighted in the area. Most have been spotted around grocery stores and they seem to be attracted to purchasers of bottled water and batteries, items most everyone in Puna buy on a regular basis being that they are on catchment and live where blackouts frequently occur.

The one thing most common in all the sightings were questions about the current rainy conditions. The reporters seem to attribute this to a weather system to the south of here but fail to realize that the real cause is the annual Labor Day motorcycle run and Weekend Drag Races. A large part of the population relocate themselves to the Kona area, where rainfall is least likely, every year just to enjoy the weekend. Hotel rooms on the other side of the island are sold out as far as a month in advance in anticipation for the Labor Day Weekend. Perhaps the reporters took advantage of the situation and found really low rates on this side, but did not find any other intersting story to cover.

Noticed More Girl/Girl Action on Network TV Lately?

Maybe it's just me and that I pay attention to these things, albeit to the disapproval of my wife, but it seems to me that there are a lot more girl/girl action happening on primetime network TV as of late--especially when a show needs a few more Nielsen ratings points.

Most recently, The New Twilight Zone, Meet the Parents (the reality series), Fastlane, Firefly, Friends, Once and Again, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Six Feet Under, Ally McBeal, etc. to name a few.

What surprises me is that no one is complaining.

Sex and Violins

Okay, I know I'm taking a chance here that I'm going to piss people off, but I was doing some web-searching recently for stuff about Sarah Chang, who played recently with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra, and I came across one of the greatest classical-music sites I've ever seen: Beauty in Music.

It's a website devoted to sexy classical musicans.

I'm Not A Girl...

Truth be told, I'm no feminist, I'm not a parent, and I shouldn't even be on my high horse on this subject after posting so much about my celebrity crushes. But between that recent post from the Eminem fan, the saga of R. Kelly videotaping sex with a teenager, and some alarming statistics about sexuality among teenagers, I have to admit that I'm a little too worried about what we've been teaching our young people about sexuality... and other matters of the heart.

Mars & Venus in Hawaii

Local "followers" of celebrity relationship guru John Gray's "Mars & Venus" philosophy are meeting Saturday. Does this guy's advice bother anyone else?

Critics have maintained since his first (of many books) that his great plan is basically "a sexist, patronizing, male-centered invective [that] perpetuates long-held negative gender stereotypes." So I find it ironic the Hawaii gathering is taking place at the Kapi'olani Women's Center.
