Biking to work

I’ve been bicycling to work for almost four months now. It’s only a little slower than commuting by car, I get regular exercise, and it’s actually kind of fun.

The daily afternoon commute in downtown Honolulu. Boy, do I miss it. Not.

If I lived there, I’d be home by now. Hey, I did used to live there! Now that was a convenient building. It was really nice to have a city botanical garden for a back yard, too - a yard where someone else cut the grass and did the plantings.

I’ve often wondered about this outfall into Nuā€˜uanu Stream. Where exactly does all that water gushing out of it come from? There’s a high flow rate even when it’s not raining. Just how many acres of pavement and asphalt does this thing drain anyway?

In the distance, amidst the monkeypod trees, you can just barely make out the white waters of Waikahalulu, a fairly short waterfall that used to be a favorite swimming spot for Hawaiian royalty long ago. These days, I wince when I see local kids splashing around there in the plunge pool, ignoring the health department’s leptospirosis warning signs. Times change.

Where I live… there are rainbows… and lots of cars too. Almost home!
