Upgraded
Ryan Ozawa, webmaster of HawaiiStories.com, has been going around upgrading all of us HawaiiStories tenants from WordPress 1.5 to WordPress 2.0.1. Today it was my turn.
WordPress is the blog publishing tool that I use here at HawaiiStories to produce Almost Paradise. Using it is quick and painless and fairly flexible. Upgrading was the same. The new version has a WYSIWYG editor, much better than the plain-text HTML editor in the old version, with page previews and built-in file uploading tools. It’s super cool.
You folks may not notice a difference, but behind the scenes here at Almost Paradise, things look a lot nicer. Thanks Ryan!

I am not that tekkie literate… like, what’s a WYSIWYG editor? But I’m learning, poco a poco… and that Ryan is my awesome mentor, teaching me how to do things I never thought I could do. He’s patient with my newbie questions, and has encouraged me to blog much more frequently and with a great deal more confidence.
WYSIWYG editor? Adunno dat kine. But what I do know is that Ryan is an awesome webmaster. I’m looking forward to learning how to use the upgrade.

WYSIWYG means What You See Is What You Get. It’s the difference between using a plain text editor and seeing <b>this</b> when you want to write the word “this” in bold, versus using a WYSIWYG editor and seeing this.

Hmmm, I’m just the opposite. Whenever I need to document anything at work I usually try to do it in raw HTML. But I suppose I can see how that might not be palatable for everybody.

It depends on what I need to do. If it’s anything fancy, then yeah, raw HTML is clearer and lets me think about exactly what I’m trying to do. But when I am just plain writing, I like to use bolds and italics without hand-keying every last < and > sign. One drawback to the new upgrade’s WYSIWYG feature is that there is definitely a performance hit. I’m willing to put up with it but I can see how it might get annoying.

OK, I take it back. The WYSIWYG editor is officially annoying. The performance hit is a drag, and I found that I kept hitting the “view HTML” button all the time anyway. However, it’s easy enough to toggle it off, so no biggie. I’m back to the raw HTML view. I do still really like the post preview feature, which is WYSIWYG, that’s built into the edit page.
