Easter turkey
So there I am, driving through KaimukÄ« on an Easter weekend, and there’s a flash of white at the side of the road. Is it a big pigeon? Nope… too big. A chicken? Could be, although who keeps chickens in KaimukÄ« these days? I slow down for a better look and do a double-take.
It’s not a pigeon. It’s not a chicken. It’s a young white turkey.
I have absolutely no explanation for this.

My mistake. It wasn’t a young white turkey. It was a domesticated white guinea fowl (Numida meleagris). See here and here for reference photos. Why a white guinea fowl was walking on the sidewalk, I still cannot explain.

Reminds me of last week; I was driving to our tiny town of Damascus. We live out in the country and the road there winds through the hills. I came around a curve, and there in front of me, were three peacocks slowly ambling along together. I could have passed them, but decided to drive slowly behind them, watching them. Small town, no cars behind me.
They didn’t increase their pace, just meandered along the road like royalty awaiting their due respect. They finally turned in at someone’s driveway, and I continued on to town.

As a city kid, I guess I am just not used to livestock wandering around in the streets.
