Farley sitting on Rusty’s head

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

Farley, our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and Rusty, our Tibetan Spaniel, are usually best buddies and playmates. But this time Rusty wasn’t in the mood to play… so Farley sat on his head. Carefully and deliberately. What cracked me up was that Rusty let him do it.

I made this clip fooling around with iMovie. I can see how this kind of thing could be a huge time sink… as if I didn’t have enough to do already…

The Zoo

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

“You haven’t posted new dog photos for a while,” Judy told me. “Farley’s grown a lot bigger in two months.” She’s right. Here are a few shots that Judy took recently:

Christmas lights

It’s amazing how a few colored lights can lift one’s spirits so.

Bernard

Thursday, November 30th, 2006

Judy once told me that she could imagine being perfectly happy as a zoo keeper. Well, I guess she’s decided that it’s worth pursuing as a backup career. Step by step, Judy is transforming our yard into her very own reptilian petting zoo.

This is her latest addition, a Hermann’s Tortoise that she has named Bernard. Hermann’s Tortoises are European, as opposed to our three-toed box turtles (Chester, Molly, Abigail, and Chestnut) and ornate box turtle (Daisy), who are all North American.

Easter turkey

Tuesday, April 18th, 2006

So there I am, driving through Kaimukī on an Easter weekend, and there’s a flash of white at the side of the road. Is it a big pigeon? Nope… too big. A chicken? Could be, although who keeps chickens in Kaimukī these days? I slow down for a better look and do a double-take.

It’s not a pigeon. It’s not a chicken. It’s a young white turkey.

The friendly neighborhood ʻaukuʻu

Friday, March 31st, 2006

On Friday I had left my car at Sears to get some work done. It poured at lunch, but by pau hana time the skies had cleared enough that I didn’t get wet as I walked through Ala Moana Park on the way back from my office. The drainage canal inside the park was chocolate-brown with silty runoff.

Urban wildlife sighting

Wednesday, March 8th, 2006

Never mind the doves and the mynahs and the kolea; I see ‘em all the time. But as I was driving in to work this morning, I saw an ʻaukuʻu (also known as the black crowned night heron) flying over me on North King Street, at the Kalihi Stream bridge, probably on its way out to Keʻehi Lagoon. Wow! It’s cool that wild marsh birds like this still can be seen, even above one of the most built-up waterways in the middle of the city.

Urban wildlife caught on film

Friday, February 24th, 2006

Caught this shot yesterday morning. Somebody had left bread out for the doves. Now, all by itself, that spotted dove would be at the top of the pecking order and make all the little zebra doves bow in homage. But then a wild Honolulu jungle fowl shows up, and even the proud spotted dove must yield to the tall brown newcomer. Or something like that. It’s late.
