Yea, I remember the days when my mom and dad would drive that road to go to town, back in the ’50s. Dad had a couple of cars but the best trips were always in the old Desoto. Coming around the corner from town, where the look out is now and the wind would be sooooo strong that even that old tank would rock in the wind.
A friend from California came for a visit in ’71 and I remember hiking up that valley to see the remains of a Japanese plane crash. Was told the Zero was shot down during the attack that went on at Kaneohe Base, during the Pearl Harbor attack.
Nice pictures, thanks for reviving some good ol’ memories.

Please drop me a note to let me know where you're using them if they are online or in some other public setting. And yes, that was definitely Alani's neck. :-)

Oh my gosh Eric, I stumbled on your blog while doing a search for "na alahele" and I am blown away. I never read blogs. First of all, your photos are stunning (and I know good photos), your narration–especially combining your plant i.d. with feedback for corrections–was especially nice, AND I've known Alani for over 15 years and am pretty sure that's his neck in one of those photos!

So claps and thumbs up for you!

I have a request: could I please use a few of your photos for personal and/or non-commercial stuff? I always credit stuff that is not mine.. Please let me know.

Thank-you for the beautiful article and photos. I hiked the same trail in 1965 with friends when I was 14 years old.
The first time I drove our "woody" filled with St. Louis and Sacred Hearts kids over the Old Pali Road, I got stuck on the steepest "hairpin turn." The cars lined up in back of me and one man came over to try and help. He told kids to get out of my station wagon and stand up next to the rock, out of traffic, and told cars behind me to gradually try to ease back from my back bumper. The lighter car, with me at the wheel, was able to just slip off the narrow "curb," kids got back in and I was so grateful to the man who helped. I drove that road to Kaimuki my Junior and Senior years at SHA, taking riders, but that never happened again. Thank goodness!

Aloha everyone... I jus did this hike today & it was surely beautiful...

I loved those old bridges, beautiful landscapes, & looking at those river beds, was just breathe taking...

The hike was fairly easy, gravel road with a slight incline, nothing strenuous...

We didn't make it to the end but it was still a nice walk... we walked about 1hr 30 min's in before deciding to turn around & save the rest for another day... Need to start earlier...

We saw those markers that you guys were talking about earlier & was wondering where they went but will save that for another day! Thanks for letting me share my experience... Aloha
