Lieutenant Valentina Lysenko the executive officer of the UNRV Dillingham pondered what the new guys where thinking about the various course changes that the Dillingham was doing. During her shift of the last seven hours she made five course changes that was meant for the Dillingham to end up at the one of the sides of this fleet or flanking them. This fleet countered each move by turning their fleet to meet the Dillingham head on.
While this may have looked bleak for the ship, on the good side this fleet was turning away from Earth and while not heading for Saturn it was getting closer to it, this situation could be used as an advantage in using terrain around Saturn against them should they turn out to be hostile. As a Research Vessel or RVs as they are known, the only assets it had was it speed, actually and better put technically it was it’s ability to rapidly change it’s velocity. It could not start and stop on a dime but it’s real secret was that compared to all of the known deep spaceships of the United Nations Space Fleet and the starships of the Fodani Collective and the Dicon Galactic Empire the RVs were the least massive. The only other ships that could outrun the RVs were the fighters that the UNSF had but they were never meant to be used on long range missions, their endurance was about 3 days, while a RV could stay out for 3 months with no problem.
While the RV’s had the capability to perform electronic warfare or counter electronic warfare the ships best suited for that role were the Survey Vessels or SVs. They like the RV’s were submarines converted to space travel, while the RVs were US Los Angles class submarines, the SV’s were Russian Typhoon submarines. Both the RVs and SVs couldn’t land on planets or take off from them, they were meant to orbit planets, conduct scientific surveys on it, launch probes if the need arise or even launch a shuttle.
Valentina did ask Captain Baxter if she was planning on hailing this fleet to find out what they are up to but felt at the current situation that hailing them was a bad idea since they had outer marker D9 for the last fourteen hours and they made no attempt to respond to it, but if they did respond to it she was to wake her up. During her shift nothing came through the communication channels. She even asked Lieutenant Grace Hughes and Ensign Lucy Santos to see if the equipment was working and it was, just that no one was talking out there, not the new guys, not Earth, even the UNRV Woodlawn transponder signal went silent, even though it was shadowing the Dillingham at a closer distance now.
“Any change in the new guys?” asked Karen
“They keep on changing their course such that want to meet us face to face.” replied Valentina “Must be a cultural thing.”
Karen just grinned, she couldn’t think of anything to respond to that statement.
“Did you sleep well?” asked Valentina
“Sort of, why don’t you take a break My turn to run things around here.” said Karen
“Sure. By the way have you reconsidered about contacting the new guys?” asked Valentina
“Not yet. I do plan on doing it but not right now.” replied Karen “When is the last time you did a course change?”
“About fifteen minutes ago,” replied Valentina “and they did turn to respond to us. We could use the warp capacitor and just jump to the place we want to go to.”
“Yeah we could but I am no in rush to surprise these guys.” said Karen “Besides why use a full house while a three of a kind will do.”
“Huh?” said Valentina
“Poker,” replied Karen “why over do things.”
“So now what?” asked Valentina
“If I was back on Earth,” said Karen “doing what I am doing now there. I would stop and see what they would do next.”
“Physics say otherwise here.” reminded Valentina
“What’s the estimated time of contact with the new guys?” asked Karen
“Roughly nine hours at current velocities” replied Lieutenant Donna Lyman who was on the navigation station.
“Lets do something different.” suggested Karen
“Like what?” asked Valentina
“Grace what’s up ahead look like?” asked Karen
“All clear up to 1 million kilometers, on the last update.”
“Lucy,” said Karen “signal Cougar 3 our intention that for the next three hours we will be decelerating starting in 5 minutes. However they should be aware of the situation as it develops and we may not be able to give them advanced warning.”
“Aye Captain” said Lucy
“Three hours?” asked Valentina
“Yeah, plenty time for some rest” replied Karen.
“After that?” asked Valentina
“Who knows.” replied Karen
Valentina didn’t know what to say next.
“What?” asked Karen
“You don’t know what to do next?” asked Valentina
“Well sort of,” replied Karen ”I am doing a wait and see with the new guy, see how he responds to us slowing down.”
“So what do you expect the new guy to do next?” asked Valentina
“If I knew that I wouldn’t have tried to slow down for the new guy.” replied Karen “Besides I am not psychic.”
“You could have fooled me” said Valentina
“Just go to sleep will you, I promise I will wake you up if things get dicey.” said Karen.
“Good night mom” joked Valentina.
